Subject For Discussion at Meeting
In April.
The Sumter County Agricultural So
ciety met Thursday in monthly seeeioD
but as the attendance was not very
large the amount of business done was
inconsiderable, amounting only to an
informal disoussion upon pertinent
topics of interest to the farmers.
The district iostitute, to be held
here during the summer, was discussed
by the farmers.
To facilitate matters, the president
was authorized to confer with the
proper parties In the other counties,
Schley and Maoon, in reference to the
success of the institute.
Following this, the farmers entered
upon a short discussion of the merits
of top dressing as applied to oats. Mr.
James Wilson related hie experience
in applying nitrate of soda to bis grow
ing crop at the rate of GO to 100 lbs.
per acre, and was pleased thereat.
He was followed by Mr. Crawford
Whoatley, who related his experience
last year in applying nitrate of soda
alone, and thu soda mixed with land
plaster, to wheat and corn. Tho ro-
suit was most gratifying, Mr. Wheat-
ley realizing a fine yield of corn.
And this, too, upon the poorest land
on his farm, which heretofore had pro
duced almost nothing.
Mr. Wheatley thought it inadvisable
at this lato date to top dross fall oats
with tho soda, but advised putting it
upon spring oate. The entire discus-
sion was most interesting, !
Messrs, W. A. Seales, Crawford
Wheatley and Dr. H. H. McKellar
were appointed a committeo to select a
subject for discussion at tho next meet
ing and named that of "The Cultiva
tion of Corn and Application of Nitrate
of Soda as a Top Dressing” for mem
bers to talk upon. ’
Tho meeting acoepted this, and re
quested Mr. Wheatley to lead the dis
cussion, others present to give their
views and experiences upon this and
other subjects.

Feminine Americas Will Be Abroad
Tomorrow.
That occsaiou, dearest of all to the
feminine heart—the millinery open
ing—is at band, and the fond dream
of sleepless nights and never-ending
days is abont to be'realizjd. Tomor
row is the day, and ere the breakfast
dishes are eleared away, and with no
thought of the midday meal "mom-
mei” will be up and doing, ere some
other woman arrives at the goal ahead
of her. For once all else is relegated
to oblivion aud naught but visions of
a double-decked, turret shaped, spin
naker boom and triple expansion
spring bonnet, with the Faster stamp
upon it, fits before her enrap
tured gaze. The patient family ox,

this is her day, and she will revel in it

PREPARING TO TAKE RETURNS.
Recoiver Ralford Will Hear Arguments
This Wook.
Now is the season of giving in one’s
taxes at hand, and Deceiver Baiford is
ready for the spring rnsb, which this
year promises to bo greater than ever
in the way of replenishing the county’s
coffers. All tho paraphernalia of his
oilice is here, and on Thursday next he
will be ready for business. After a
stay of several days at the courthouse
Receiver Baiford will begin his round
of the country districts, which sched
ule will be published in full. He will
be in the oity every Saturday, and on
other days as well, to reoeivo property
returns. It is an nsBnred fact that
property values in Sumter county will,
this year; far exceed values last year,
perhaps to the extent of 8200,000 or
8250,1)00, If all property of every kind
is returned.
Americus Will Thus Protect Her Se
curities.
The city will pay out tomorrow or
the day following quite a goodly snm
as interest on what remains of hor
bonded indebtedness. This amounts
to about $85,000, and the interest due
at present is about 82,700. These bonds
were issued, some of them more than a
dozen years ago, for waterworks and
sewerage l systems, and general im
provements. Bonds to the amount of
$2,000 are paid off and retired annually,
and in this way the entire debt is made
light upon the taxpayers. The interest
money required is all in hand, and
Treasurer Hawkes is authorized to
make the required payments this week.
Few oities have snob a small bonded
indebtedness ub has Americus, while
her public utilities, for whioh this debt
was incurred, are among the best in the
state.

Now Above Water.
New Orleans, March 28.—A special I
to The States from Greenville, Miss.,
says:
At H o'clock today only about slx|
blocks of the city are above water.
All night long the police force with j
rescuing parties were at work bring
ing people from the flooded district, I
many houses being under water to a |
depth of several feet.
From the great plantations about I
the crevasse at LaGrange comes re
ports of heart-rending scenes.
Boats have been sent and negroes
have been taken from the roofs of
their cabins. Hundreds of negroes
have been brought to Greenville for
their safety while the town is filled
with cattle and stock taken from the [
plantations surrounding Greenville.
This morning comes news of a I
threatened break In the great levee
at Catfish Point, some 30 miles north
of Greenvlle, and should the break
occur Greenville will receive a deluge.
Men and material have been hurried
to the scene, and hope is entertained |
that tho levee will be saved.
Thp situation Is serious. Tho peo-1
pie here are In deep gloom. Business
is at a standstill. Both electric light

Years Will Be Required to Recover
From Volcanic Eruption.
San Juan, March 28.—Louis Hirscfi,
of this city, whose coffee plantation
In Guatemala was destroyed by the
recent eruption of the Santa Maria
Volcono, has Just returned from an
Inspection of tho devastated districts.
He says that the accounts of tho
cost to Guatemala by Santa Marla
were not exaggerated, and it will take
couple of years and perhaps long
er for the coffee industry to recover
from the blow.
‘‘This year's crop will be pretty
fair,” he added, “although much of the
coffee is damaged, some of it badly.
Next year’s crop will be poor.
“The laborers released from the
ruined Fincas would have done much
to save the situation, but unfortunate,
ly these laborers and others, for whom
there Is plenty of work waiting, are
at present in the military services of
tho republic.
“rt will be several years before
Gautemala recovers from that volca
