One man instantly killed and two
others injured by the electric bolt, was
the story reaching Amerlcus yester
day of the storm east of the city the
afternoon before. Oat on the O. J.
Cannon place two sons of Mr. Cannon,
together with a segro youth, Sam Scott,
took refuge from the storm beneath a
pine tree. Hardly had they sought its
protecting brandies era a bolt of light
ning struck the tree, shivering it to
splinters and prostrating the three
men, Scott was killed instantly, the
electric finid burning bis body and
severing the big toe of one foot com
pletely. One of thu Messrs Cannon
was also bnrned by the bolt, though
bis injuries aro not very serious. It
was indeed a miraculous escape for
both brothers, as the negro boy killed
was standing within a few feet of them
when the bolt struck.

At the regular conclave of De Molay
Commaudery No. 5, Knights Templar,
on Friday night last officers for the en
suing Masonia year were duly elected
in the following order.

The reelection of Eminent Comman
der G, H. Fields to that honored po
sition as a deserved tribute to bis zeal
and fidelity. This is the fourth time
he has been placed in that exalted po
sition by De Molay Commaudery.
The Grand Commandery will meet
in Home May 18th. and 14th. and De
Molay will send up a full delegation
upon that cccasion.

Oil Mills sounded the 0 o’clock blast
last night it was the last one nntii the
mills resnme in September next. Ihe
big plant closed down yesterday, after
a very basy season, and the acres
buildings will be silent daring the dull
summer season now beginning. The
Americas plant is one of the largest
and best equipped oil mills in the
South, and while not rnn at its capaci
ty daring the season now dosing
has, nevertheless, oonsamed more
than ten thousand tons cottonseed
the manufacture of meal, oil and by
produots, and under the superior
reotion of General Manager M. S. Har
per its affairs are oondneted with great
snccess. It Done of Amerious’ most
important and yaluablo industries,
and gives employment to more than
half a hundred people in its several de
partments.

way officials stopped off several hours
in Americas yesterday and took a look
over the thriftiest little city on that
great system. In the party were Gen
eral Passenger Agent J. C. Haile; Di
vision Superintendent Hall, Commer
cial Agent Estes and Travelling Pas
senger Agent Mallory, Upon leaving
Amoricus the party went to Anderson-
ville National Cemetery, spending the
remainder of the afternoon at that his
toric spot. While here they paid the

here that Dr. C. W. Byrd, pastor of
the First Methodist Chnrch of Atlanta,
has declined the presidency of the
Wcsloyan Female College at Macon,

John Murray was hauled to the po
lice barraoka last night for repairs,
He attended a mullet supper the night
before and was literally hacked to
pieees, while a ballet holo in the head
was givon him for good measure.
Charles Jones, charged with the cat

Washington, April 11—Several Im
portant changes in the army occurred
today Major General Robert P.
Hughes having rekchd the age of 64
yfears, which marks the limit of ser
vice on the active list, was placed on
the retired list. He was recently
relieved from duty in command of the
Department of California. The vacan
cy In the grade of Major General
caused by General Hughes’ retirement
was today filled by the promotion of
Brigardier General Joseph C, Erect
enrfdgo. inspector general of the army.
That officer will -be immediately retir
ed gad Brigadier Genial Marshall I.
Lu-dington, quartermaster general of
the army, will be promoted- to the rank
of major general. General Lulling-
ton -will in turn be retired, and- the va
cancy thus created will be filled by
the appointment of Brigadier General
James F. Wade to the grade of major
general. The appoi-ntment of Gener
al Wade will be permanent until his
statutory retirement in April, 1907.
General Wade is now in command of
tho department of Luzon. On the
statutory retirement of Major General
George W. Dav-is, in July -next, Gen
eral Wade will succeed to the com
mand of the division of the Philippines
which includes ail the military forces

Horrible Crime Committed Near An.
niston, Ala., by Unknown Party.
Shreveport, La., April 11.—Mrs.
Frank Matthews, 49 years of age, the
wife of Frank Matthews, a civil engi
neer of the Seaboard Air Line, and
her 10-year-old- child, Alline, were as
saulted by an unknown party at their
home near An-niston, Ala., early this
morning.
In the straggle that followed the at
tack by the assailant, Mrs. Matthews 1
head was crushed to a jelly, and she
died from her injuries.
After assaulting her mother, the as
sailant attempted to criminally assault
the child, but after beating her into
insensibility, fled, leaving -no trace be
hind him. The child 1s at a sanitari
um hero with no possible hope for her
recovery, her skull having been frac
tured and her chest crushed in during
the stuggles.
The crime is a mysterious one. Mrs,
Matthews had considerable jewelry
upon her person, which was untouch
ed. The weapon used In committing
the assault was an ax, and all evidence
shows that the crime had been delib
erately planned.
A posse with bloodhounds Is In pur
suit of the assailant, who wUl doubt
lessly be burned at the stake when
capturned.
All parties are prominent and the
greatest excitement prevails.

Electrician Meets Death.
Mobile, Ala., April 11.—John R
Burns, aged 29, electrician sergeant ai
Fort Morgan, met death In a pecullai
manner. He was superintending th«
removal of a 6-pounder gun from the
wharf to the fort. A brace broke an<
the Iron bar he was using struck birr
on the right arm, breaking It, anc
knocking him to the ground. The
heavy gun rolled over the lower pan
of the body, causing Instant death
