Memphis, Tenn., Feb. 1.—Many
people are moving from their homes In
the nothern part of this city as a re
sult of a break In the protection levee
built by the city of Memphis one year
ago. The levee gave way early on
Friday morning, and the district of
North Popular Boulevard and west of
Fourth street Is now under 2 feet of
water. If the river reaches a stage
of 41 feet, which seems probable,
larger area near the business portion
of the city will feel the effects of the
flood.
Advices from Marlon, Ark., state
that the levee at Holly Bush remains
intact although a break Is expected to
occur at any hour. The water Is
lapping the top of the structure and a
large force of men are busily engag
ed in strengthening the weaker por
tions.
Should a crevasse occur at Holly
Bush, the entire St. Francis basin
In Arkansas would receive the rush
of waters.
At Helena the main levee remains
Intact. The northern part of that
city Is flooded from the break ia the
auxiliary levee which accurred Thurs
day, and people living In that section
have been housed elsewhere.
A steady downpour of rain was re
tjorded In the vicinity of Memphis
Thursday night. The river Friday
morning marked 39.8 feet, a rise of
eight-tenths.since Thursday.
Nakhlll Mine Victim! Slowly Being
Recovered—Another Guage It Now
Being Operated to a Depth of 60
Feet In the Rulna.
Charleston, \V. Va., Feb. 1.-
Twenty-four bodies, all mangled be- J
yond recognition, have been remov
ed from the Stuart mine at Nakhlll, I
and It la now believed that the.new
guage will be running In good shape I
and that It will be possible to get out
at least a good portion ot the other |
fifty bodies of the unfortunate men,
which are certain ot being In the |
mine.
The rescuers have penetrated to I
about 60 feet, In depth, and now I
hold out no hope In the least for any |
of the men In the mine being alive.
About thirty bodies la the estimate I
of the number at the bottom of the]
shaft, and all of these are being re-[
moved as fast as uncovered.
