The Times-Kecorder on Friday con
talned an intereating aketch of the de-
parture of the Muckalee Guards from
Amencus for the battlefields of Vir
EiniaonJone 2mh 1861. It was the
forty-sixth anniversary of that fatefnl

An interesting incident that should
lave been included therein concerned
the company's battle flag which it bore
throughout the war. •
This precious emblem was fashioned
fry the fair hands of an Americas lady,
mow Mrs. M. T. Elam.
She it was who made the “bonny
bine flag” at the request of the soldier
boys. She had previously fashioned
the dag of the gallant Sumter Light
Guards, the first command leaving
Americas, and later performed the
same taak for the Muckalee Guards.
It was a labor of love which Is still
fresh in,the mind cf this noble woman
of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Elam, then Mrs. A. 13. Hawkes,
lad never seen the emblem of the Con
federary, nor bad any one else here
for that matter, but she knew the
design of the dag and fashioned
handsome one with her own hands
which her husband presented to bis
company.
The dag of the Muckalee Guards bad
embroidered upon the start and bars
the coat of arms of Georgia, adding to
Its appearance.
Mrs. Elam tells an interesting story
of the making of these first Confederate
'lags, and of other events of the war
period; how she made shirts for the
soldiers, as did other brave mothers
here, ofiimes sewing upon her machine
all day Sunday to complete a task.
With a lady friend, she iwent once to

In the office of the-Timea-Recorder is
displayed the soil map of another Geor

this progressive step, and a study of It
is very interesting.
Ail streams of tbe county are shown,

came that yankees were approaching
the city.
These ladles fled for their lives, as
-did hundreds of others.
They reached Fort Valley, where
permission was secured to ride in
freight train to Andereonviile, where
the train was going to convey yankee
prisoners. From that point they bad
to walk nearly all tbe way to Americas,
tho train coming no farther.
These and other interesting remin
iscences are told by Mrs. Elam “of the
days that tried men's souls” and the
coals of the brave women as well.

introduced at the coming session of the
