THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER, FRIDAY. JULY 12, 1907
CROPS IN SUMTER ARE
THE BEST IN YEARS
Cotton Is Growing Very
Rapidly
AND CONDITIONS MOST FAVORABLE
Experienced Planters are Well Satis*
fled With Crop Conditions Since
the Rains and Look for a
Fine Yield.
“Sumter county is growing today
one oftbe best cotton crops she has
over made. The plant is small, it is
11110, due to the late planting, but that
will make no difference in the end.
The conditions are favorable, and a
good crop is fully assured.”-*
Such is the opinion expressed yester
day by Mr. A. T. Johnson to the
Times-Recorder, and the opinion of no
other fanner in the county upon this
subject has greater weight.
Sown in the Fifteenth distnct, one of
|Khe most fertile sections of southwestern
Georgia, Mr. Johnson has extensive
farming interests, and to those he
gives the most untiring care. A sue.
ccssful planter, he can well judge crop
conditions.
And the opinion of Mr. Johnson is
that of other planters here.
During the past week rain has been
Ceneral over the county, and the crop
was in condition to receive all the
benefits therefrom.
During the protracted drought of six
'weeks duration, farmers worked their
cotton fields as free of grass as is their
front yards, and when the needed rains
came the young cotton plants took on
a wonderful growth.
While it is true, as Mr. Johnson
-states, the plant is small, it is in vigor
ous condition and susceptible to rapid
wrowth.KThe crop will be from two
‘•weeks to three weeks late this year,
due tomato planting, but Americas will
get the cotton.
Mr. Johnson is quite optomistic upon
crop conditions as a whole, and declares
that the old Fifteenth will make a good
corn crop, despite the drought.

There is more Catarrh in this section
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few
years was supposed to be Incurable.
Fdr a groat many years- doctors pro
nounced it a local disease and prescrib
ed local remedies, and by constantly
liailing to cure with 'local treatment,
pronounced it incurable. Science has
proven catarrh to be a constitutional
disease and therefore requires consti

Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney A

internally in doses from 10 drops to a

Per lent.
There are three sources that depict ludisputably the advancement or retro
gression of anv city or community. They are the Taxable values, banking
facilities and post office receipts. Daring the past five years the taxable value
of Americus have Increased 31 per cent in value.
The condition of the banks In the city were never known to be In better
shape and the post olllce receipts for the same period have increased:25 per cent.
An increase of 25 per cent evidences a wonderful growth In the city's com
merce. And, remember, this Is for five years onlv.
The gentlemen engaged In preparing statistics of Americus and a thorough
writeup of toe business and farming Interests of the city and county, as well as
of the nourishing smaller towns in Sumter, have secured the figures officially
from the postoffice records.
The statement here shown makes a complete exhibit of all receipta for the
year 1901! at the Americus post cffice and also shows the various kinds of mall
handled and the number of pieces.
The showing is a good one, that doos not have to be padded, in order to
show percentages of growth.
It shows that Americus has a roseate future, In fact, the city Is just be
ginning to asume the stride that will eventually make one of the foremost cltie a
in the southern portion of the Umpire State.

Savage Surgery In Afrloa.
Queer methods have the savage na
tive surgeons of Africa. What Is the
secret of their success It Is not easy
to conceive, but savage doctors effect
cures In spite of the most atrocious
treatment of their patients. One of the
party who was bearing Livingstone’s
body to tbe coast was shot through tbe
leg, shattering a thigh bone. This Is
how they treated him: First tljcy dug
a pit and burled him in it lUrsuch
posture that his head and arms were
free. Then they covered the earth
about his legs with a thick layer of
mud. Upon this were heaped leaves
and grass, to which fire was applied,
directly over the fracture of the limb.
The heat gradually worked down to
the wound, and tbo man suffered re
newed agonies. After awhile he was
taken out and held quite fast while
two giants with all their might stretch
ed the shattered leg. Splints were duly
applied, and the man was pronounced
on the way to a complete cure. That
was the normal practice successfully
followed for this class of casa—London

Deacon tsarabo Nathan yesterday when
he was tried and convicted before-
Judge Crisp upon the charge of operat
ing a large and fierce blind tiger on
Sunday.
The straight shot in the chaingang,
without the privilege of paying a little
fine, which Is really a license tax on
such devilment, wellnlgh paralyzed
the deacon.
Beads of perspiration as large as
buckshot stood out upon his topknot

From the courthouse window Sambo
could see fifty convicts in tbe county
corral near by, and he probably pictur
ed himself as No. 51. spade in hand,
and the whipping boss -not ten feet
away. The picture was horrible for
the deacon.
He doubtless contrasted it with his
cool grotto, where histfiretty tiger had
slumbered so long, and the perllce
couldn’t prove it.
But they proved It this time, by a
large majority, and it was a hard Jolt
for Sambo. He had been harpooned
fo. selling liquor before, the ijudge was-
told, but he went scot free that time.
Now fate was most cruel to the sly
deacon.
ADd then he sold it on Sunday morn

was ringing and the congregation
waited and watched for Deacon Nathan
to pass the hat.
The crime was a shock to the Bethes-
darlnes, as was the sentence to the
deacon yesterday.
After Sambo recovered his breath,
which was strong enough to have es
caped, he thought again ot that hot
stretch of county road on which he
was billed to dig. And he doubtless
thought of Supt. Paschal, and Just -a
few other gang matters.
He thought of the melon season Just
opening in town. Was a ‘po nigger*
ever in auch a pickle? * '
And then Sambo balked. An appeal
for a new trial might save him, at least
until the weather got cooler. The
deacon had nothing to loose in such
predicament, and motion tor a new
