by two negroes. By prompt action
he caught one of the negroes and
forced him to give up 9145, but the
negro* with the remainder of the coin
he could not wing.
Crlttendon went to Atlanta Tues
day to see about special rat -s to Cal
ifornia, as he contemplated Journey
ing westward With hig family. Short
ly after his arrival he fell In with
some of the Darktown population to
whom he confided that he was from
Leslie and had some to see about
getting a rate to California. Two
negro men claimed to be going to the
same place and volunteered to give
him full Information.
A little later while in the railroad
yards the negroes asked Crlttendon
to change two *100 bills. Crlttendon
"bit and was counting out his money
with two large bills lying at his
band. vAs he finished the count the
two negroes grabbed all the money
and ran. He followed, and caught
one of the negroes. He wrested $145
from this one, but In the meantime
the othor one escaped and Crlttendon
was forced to return with, less than
half of his cash.
Preparatory to his trip Crlttendon,
who Is also a preacher, got a letter
of recommendation signed by a num

but this did not prevent him from
being an easy mark for his Atlanta

GORDO, ALA., Dec. 12.—(Special)
—Editor, Peters, of the Gordo Mes
senger has sent out a full statement
as to the trouble between negroes
and whites In Pickens county. He
shows that the reports were vastly ex
aggerated and that the rumored
wholesale slaughter of whites and
blacks was entirely In error.
He says:
‘ -Last Friday night negroes went to
the cotton house of Early I .owe and
stole nearly a thousand pounds of
seed cotton.. So many farmers have
lost so much cotton that Mr. Lowe cut
up small particles of paper and put
In the cotton so It could be Identi
fied. He went Saturday morning, af
ter missing the cotton, to a gin own-
ed and operated by negroes, and
found his cotton. Later It was told
him who carried the cotton there. A
warrant was sworn out for a negro
named Will Lowe, and put in the
hands of R. v. Lowe and Robert
Price to serve. They went and ar
rested a negro and Btarted with him
to Jaih
When the prisoner began to call
out loudly, ‘Mandolin,’ up rushed a
hundred negroes, some with guns,
and began shooting at Mr. Lowe, who
had hold of the negro. He held to
“ Prisoner until the negro was
killed by thosa of his relatives and
mends, who were shooting at the
ofljeer. Three balls went Into the
4 n . e * ro - J? 1 * Mr- l«we sa>'s the bullet
that killed the negro was fired by
the negro's brother.
“Several small shot hit Mr. Lowe
in the face and legs, but not sufficient
to cause much pain.
•'When the negroes discovered that
they had killed one of their own
number, they ran off.
“This occurred Sunday afternoon
near sun down.
Monday morning, about 500 men,
with the sheriff, went Into lx>we
Town, where only negroes live, and
where the negro was killed, and be
gan a thorough search' of the plaee
for the criminals. About thirty have
been arrested and put In Jail at Car
rollton.
“No one was killed except the negro
prisoner.
“For many years Lowe Town hdk
been obnoxious to law-abiding cltl
sens. Thieving, and robbery occur
(rcquently and when the negroes once
get back to Lowe Town they are
safe.
One negro who had no crop, had
sold thirteen bales of cotton and, of
course, It wns stolen.
"They nil belong to secret- socie
ties, and the word ‘mandolin’ was
their pass word of. distress.
Their lodge was burned and a com
plete rout of the negroes effected.
The whltp people are detrmlned not
to let them again build up Lowe Town
.Everything Is quiet here.”

GAGGED BY FUMES
OF GAS IN JAIL
Aroused by gas pouring from 1
broken pipe, a prisoner on the sec
ond floor of the couqty Jail gave the
alarm at an earlv hour .vMtonisv
alarm at an early -hour yesterday
morning and thereby probably saved
himself and other Inmates from as
phyxiation. It is said that the "break”
was located In tbe cell occupied by
L. C. Joiner, and some time was re
quired in opening windows and
freeing the building from escaping
gas. In Joiner’s cage Is a small gas
stove, connected with the pipes by a
long rubber tube, which. In some way,
became disconnected and thus al
lowed the poisonous fluid to flood the
upper coriidar. Had not the acci
dent been discovered In time some of
the prisoners might have succumbed
to the deadly fumes.

College street property owners, from
Forest street to Barlow, a distance of
a half mile, are required to ' put
dow’n pavements of concrete tiling that
entire distance, where such Improve
ment has not been made already
This was the order Issued by Coun
cil at the recent meeting on Thurs
day evening.
A large portion of College street is
thus well paved already, but there
are sections unpaved In front of some
residences, and it must all be made
uniform. *•
Council likewise ordered property
owners on Lee street, where graded
and curbed, to lay tiled pavements
within a given time, while Brannon
avenue, recently graded and granlto-
curbed. Is to be tiled Its entire length.
Miles of tiled pavements have beon
*lald In Amerlcus within the past two
or three years and the residence sec
tion is the best paved of that of any
city In the State. Tiling is also laid
In a large part of the business sec
tion.
This tiling not only makes a Very
handsome pavement, adding to too
beauty of the city, but Its lasting
qualities render it the most desirable
material for paving.
