that none of the victims was lynched
for such petty or trivial crimes as In
some previous years. A large ma
jority of the victims were guilty of
criminal assault or attempted crim
inal assault. —
The lynchlngs "were most numerous
In Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and
Louisiana. Farther northr there were
two lynchlngs In Maryland and one
In Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. Al
together there were lynchlngs In

curred In the hot summer months,

The receipts for the day by wagon
were 217 bales. Quotations are
unchanged.
After a day of moderate activity,
cotton closed Wednesday close around
the flgures for Tuesday's Anal, the
variations being 1 to 2 points above
and below, except that December at
New Orleans made an abrupt Jump
at the first, but lost about half of
the Initial gain before the close. The
opening was 3 points lower to
point higher for the active months.
The market grew firmer until prices
were 6 to 13 polnts^above the prev
ious close, buying orders comlpg Into
the market. The Inevitable profit-
taking In the afternoon sent values
off until prices were left very little
changed from the final for the day
before.
. New York opened unchanged to 1
points lower, December being the
. largest loser. An advance of several
fraints was made, after which prices
fluctuated narrowly, growing weaker
towards the close, which was steady,
1 point lower for December and Jan
uary and 1 to 2 points higher for the
later positions, as compared with the
close for the day before. Spot prlcps
were unchanged. New Orleans open
ed 28 points higher for December/but
2 points -lower to 2 points higher*for
later months. The market adyanced
several points and then cased off.
The close was steady 1 point net
lower to 2 points higher, with Dec
ember 13 points above the final for
Tuesday. Spot quotations were re
duced l-8c. *
Liverpool was due., 4 to 5 points
down and opened 4 to 6 points lower,
The market Improved and at the
close the losses had been reduced to
1. to 3 points below the close for
Tuesday. Spot prices were reduced
3 points with sales of 10,000 bales.
The English market Is due to open
2 points'down this morning.
The national glnners' report was
promulgated yesterday, tho flgures
being 9,350,000 bales. The census
bureau will Issuo its estimate to
morrow. Should they be around those
put out yesterday, tho market, should
be put little affected. Not over 2.000,-

ned this season.

London Education Committee Is nbout
to undertake a most Interesting do
mestic experiment. It will furnish
a houso In dne of the poorer districts
of London where girls will undergo
six weeks’ training with n teacher.
The pupils will take their meals
nnd sleep In the house, forming
family of seven, for whom each one
will In turn net as housekeeper and
cook. During the first two weeks the
household will be conducted as though
It had to live on a. wage -of $18 a
week. During the next two weeks a
wage of $15 a week will be assumed,
and In the third period the family will
descend to the relative penury of $10
a week. The experiment will be only
a beginning, and it Is believed that
when the system Is In full working
order It will impart valuable' train
ing, and make the girls of the peo
pie. into excellent housewives.

MR. PHILIP I. WISE
DIED O NMONDAY
Mr. Philip J. Wise,‘residing on the
Hawkins plantation, west of Ameri
cus, passed away Wednesday morning,
the cud following an illress of some
length. Mr. Wise was about forty
years of age and a most estimable
cltlxen, with a large family connec
tion in'the county. His wife and six
children survive him. The funeral
will take place today at Lebanon
