Renewed eij^husiasm In the future
of the Board of Trade was manifest
ed at the meeting of the directors
Wednesday night. The new President.
Mr. Lee Allen, took the^relns In a
vigorous manner and the directors
present were In a sanguine mood.
President Allen referred to the
fact that meetings of the Board of
Trade were held only twelve times
a year, and expressed the conviction
that every member ought to attend,
unless unavoidably detained. He
declared that Indifference would come
nearer breaking down the organiza
tion than non-payment of dues. He
preferred twenty-five active members
who could be depended upon, to four
times that number who would not
attend except at long Intervals.
The question of collecting back
dues was brought up. The report of
Secretary Pruitt showed that a num
ber who were behind had expressed
the Intention of severing their connec
tion with the Board of Trade. It
was suggested, as the collections had
not been pushed, that the back dues
be remitted and all start In on, the
dollar a month basis. The view fin
ally prevailed that this method was
not a good one. It being held that the
obligations were just ones, and should
be paid by all members.
Chairman Gardner of the Member
ship Committee, expressed his inten
tion of going out after new mem
bers. President Allen offered to ac.
company any member of the commit
tee on a round of the eliglbles. He
stated that he thought a large num
ber of young men might be brought
In, their membership giving them an
unuBual opportunity to get in touch
with the business men of the city.
The proposed banquet was also dis
cussed. It was suggested that an
efTort be made to get speakers from
abroad, but after several names had
been suggested, It was decided, to
depend upon local talent for the ora
tory!
LETTER TO E. C. SCHWABA,
t Americas, Georglu.
Dear Sir: Tell the owner: “I
paint Devoe, nothing else, unless you
want me to paint something else; I’ll
paint whatever you like: it's your
house, not mine; your job, not mine.
It’s mine, if I do It my way, It’s yours,
if I do It your way. ’ .
“It will cost you less. Devoe; less
gallons to buy and brush on; less
money for paint, less money for
wages; a gallon put on It about $5;
Devoe will cost less by a tenth to
a half, according to what you com
pare It with; and wears better, how
much better depends on what you com
pare It with—It may be a year, It
may be ten.
“It Is my business to know how to
paint «a well as to paint; and I do.
You can see my jobs by the dozen.”
That’s straight talk. The man who
can talk like that with a steady eye,
will have plenty of business; good
business too; and men will stand by
him. Ydurs truly,

Good Results.
At a meeting of the Directors of
lh> Board of Trade held Wednesday
.night, the desirability of having an
enumeration of the city taken was
discussed. Mr. G. W. Glover, who Is
one of the committee appointed to
wait on the City Council tonight and
urge the necessity of such a census,
spoke at some length. His remarks
were heartily endorsed by other mem
bers.
Mr. Glover pointed out the fact
that In the mercantile agency books
Amerlcus was credited with less than
,8,000 Inhabitants, the. figures being
taken from the Federal cefisus of
1900, while other and neighboring cit
ies had taken A census which had
resulted in nearly double their 1900
figures In the mercantile books.
The question of expense was dis
cussed, and It. was agreed that the
census could be taken accurately for
perhaps $100. Mr. Glover was of the
opinion that the city would get many
times that benefit In having Its real
size emblazoned to the business world.
He said that whenever a business man
anywhere In the United Statee had
occasion to consider Amerlcus, he
was inevitably confronted with the
figures which said that the city had
less than 8,000 souls.
A proposition was submitted for
the publication of a city directory, the
plan being for the Board of Trade to
take the census and the City Council
agree to take 100 copies of the direc
tory. It was decided to await the
action of the City Council on the
latter part of the proposition.

Farmers about Amerlcus are busy
now In planting their crops, and
very few have come to the city this
week even for a half day. The corn
crop has been planted, very general
ly, and only requires a good rain now
to bring it up. Cotton planting Is
also under good headway this week.
Several of ihe largest planters In the
county were In Amerlcus yesterday
and all reported fine progress with
cotton planting. About the same acre
age as last year will be planted here,
the past prevailing money stringency
preventing' any Increase of acreage,
even had there been a desire upon
the part of the farmers to plant more
cotton, which is doubtful. Farming
conditions generally are very good.
There Is a sufficiency of labor, and
farmers hope for good results this
year.
