Sumter Comes Up Gamely
As Expected.
A check for $666 given yesterday by
the Board of County Commissioners
paid up in full every dollar of the
amount due by that body towards the
Third district Agricultural College. A
little balance of $1,000 remained, and
the county thus pays Its part.
And when the city pays a little
balance of $666 Its obligations will
have been paid In full.
And thus Amerlcus and Sumter
county will have discharged its obli
gations 111 full l>y having paid $50,-
000 for this Institution.
Under the terms of agreement, the
city was to assume one third and the
county two thirds of this obligation
of $50,000. The county made its
final payment of $666 yesterday, and
has thus paid $33,333.66 towards the
agricultural school.
The city has paid all of its part ex
cept about $666, having paid about
$16,000 up to this date.
And this splendid institution with
125 pupils in attendance; with build
ings equipped and a magnificient farm
of 300 acres, worth $50 per acre, stands
an enduring monument to the progres
sive spirt of Sumter county and Its
citizens.
The two main buildings there cost
$32,000, the machine shop, used tem
porarily for other purposes, cost
$750, while $850 was expended upon
the water and sewerage system.
The farm Is well equipped with
mules, stock and farming utensils of
every kind required.
Under the superior management of
Supt. John M. Collum and his c6rps
of teachers, excellent progress has
been made, and it Is believed that the
Third District College now easily
ranks all of the eleven district
schools of like kind in the state.
But there is more work to be
done, and it will be accomplished.
While the $50,000 required of
Sumter county by the State has been
paid, except the small balance of
$666 due by the city, the general
plans of the college for other
expenditures in the way of additional
buildings and improvement of the
grounds.
The girls dormitory, dining hall,
library and four cottages are Includ
ed In the plans, and the cost of
these will be defrayed In' appropria
tions to be made later by the state.
TAKING THE CENSUS OF
SCHOOLS IN AMERICUS
Work Will be Entered on
Today.
A school census of Americus Is to
be taken, under the provisions of the
state law, and this Important work
will be entered upon today with two
enumerators to take the names of all
those of school age In Americus, both
white and colored.
Every child or youth between the
ages of six and eighteen will thus be
counted and reported.
Supt. Miller of the city schools, stat
ed yesterday that the work of tak
ing the school census must be com
pleted by May 1st, although It will
require hard work to do It.
Mr. Geo. W. Stallings and one other
will do the counting.
And it |s confidently expected that
this enumeration will show 2,500 or
2,600 pupils of school age in Ameri
cus. The school census taken five
years ago showed a total of 2,068 here,
but there has been a rapid growth in
population since then.
Supt. Miller said yesterday that he
felt quite sure the figures this time
would exceed 2,500.
A school census of Sumter county
is being taken as well, hut under al
together different direction, this being
under supervision of the county board
of education. And the county census
will show a total of 6,000 pupils, out
side of Americus.
Thus, the school and the city cen
sus Is being taken at the same time,
but under different auspices. And
each will reflect the splendid growth
of Americus.

I FOR JOE BROWN
Even to the friends of Joe Brown
the growth of the sentiment towards
his candidacy Is surprising. Polls
are being taken on trains, in hotels
and In casual crowds, and the show
ing made by Mr. Brown Is always a
splendid one.
"There were sewn of us in the
smoker of a Central train coming Into
Americus last night,” said Mr. D. C.
Pickett yesterday. "I took a poll Just
to see what the result would be. It
shewed that there were 5 Joe Brown
men, 1 non-commltal and 1 for Hoke
Smith.”
"Down at Bainbrtdge Mr. L. C.
Toole ran for the state senate on
Hoke Smith platform, that being the
issue. His opponent was Mr. Patter
son, a Joe Brown man. Though Deca
tur went more than 500 for Hoke
Smith in the last election, Patterson
won by 200 votes.”

FORCED BY TRUST TO
PAY MORE FOR ICE
Americus consumers. It Is said,
continue to pay from 60c, and even
more, per hundred pounds for ice
while other cities, fortunate In the
possession of an ice factory that
makes ice instead of remaining shut
up, get their Ice for less.
Albany consumers, for instance, buy
Ice at 35 cents per hundred. It is
of the very best quality, and full
weight. The same conditions obtain
elsewhere.
But Americus consumers cannot buy
It at that price, even at other fan
tory points.
It seems that there Is a tacit un
derstanding or agreement among man
ufacturers not to Invade each other's
territory. except at an advanced
price. It Is this, no doubt, that ac
counts for the higher price prevail
ing here.
An Americus consumer who ordered
Ice from another city where It re
tailed at 25 cents, was charged 35
cents for ice there, and in addition
paid express charges.
This smacks very strongly of the
flavor of an ice trust.
Just when ice will again be manu
factored in Americus, whore two
plants have stood dormant for many
months, Is an enigma that none will
venture to guess.
It is understood that the Messrs.
Maynard here have purchased
execution held by the Vogt Company
against the city Ice plant for about
$8,500, and may operate the factory
later In the year, unless It is dis
posed of otherwise.
The other plant here is being put
in shape to be operated, though it Is
not known when a start there will be
made.

PONIES ARE KILLED BY
A BOLT OF LIGHTNING
Accident on Monday Re
markable One.
A pair of ponies driven by Mr.
Bosey Tracey were Instantly killed
yesterday morning hy a bolt of elec
tricity during the slight thunderstorm
prevailing, while Mr. Tracey who
was in the buggy at the time, escaped
with a severe shock only.
The Incident was a remarkable one
In many ways, evidencing the fancy
freaks of lightning.
Mr. Tracey, who Is a farmer well
known in Americus, was driving his
pair of ponies near Adam's station
when the rain and thunderstorm came
up suddenly.
A flash of lightning landed the
ball of electricity upon his buggy,
tearing away part of one front wheel.
Glancing, the bolt struck the leather
lines and spilt In half, following' the
reins to the heads of the ponies and
killing them.
That Mr. Tracey escaped with his
life is indeed remarkable.
