DECLIN^IN COTTON

ANNUAL MEETING DE
MOLAY COMMANDERY
Continued Concessions De
manded by Jobbers.
Officers Chosen, Report
on Inspection Read.
ATLANTA, GA., April 20,—(Spe
cial)—That the decline In the price
of spot cotton, rather than a general
trade depression, la responsible for
the distress of mill owners through
out the country, is the view taken by
President Harvie Jordan, 'of the
Southern Cotton association. Hede-
clares'that as prices descend, the
Clares iuac r*
Jobbing trade demands concessions in
the price of yarns and fabrics. The
mills find themselves with accumulat
ed stocks, manufactured when cotton
was high, which they don’t care to
sell at prices lower than those sev
eral months back. Says Mr. Jor-
dan: . A
“For several months prior to April
first, the spinning Industry in New
England and the South was very
much disturbed. A goodly number of
mills In Massachusetts, the Carollnas
and Georgia were forced to go on
short time In order to prevent tne ar-
cumulation of yarns and manufactur
ed goods which did not find ready
sale at profitable prices. General de
pression in this country, following
fast upon the heels of the financial
panic, precipitated In Wall street
last October, caused a slackening up
in the buying power of the American
people.

EVERY DAY WILL
BE A
BARGAIN DAY
“Within the past two weeks we
have heard hut little talk about con
tinued curtailment, and the efforts
made In both New England and the
south to secure a general shut-down
or curtailment of all the mills for
sixty days have failed. The cotton
mills in this country and in Europe
are now suffering more from the re
cent heavy .depression in the price
of spot cotton than In the continued
slackening In trade. As the price of
spots go down the jobbing trade de
mands continued concessions in the
price of yarns and manufactured fab
rlcs, and the mills flpd themselves in
many instances with accumulated
stocks of goods, manufactured from
higher priced cotton, which they do
not desire to sell at prices much low
er than existed a few, months back.
“The present hand-to-mouth policy
of the mills in buying spot cotton Is
proving one of the best weapons the
speculators have to hammer prices.
Trade conditions are Improving, the
unemployed are again being put to
work in the industrial centers of the
country, and the present lull in the
demand for cotton fabrics cannot con
tlnue much longer.

PEACH CROP IN STATE
The Georgia peach crop is still safe
despite the recent cold snap. Ac
cording to State Entomologist E. L.
Worsham the weather was not severe
enough to to do Injury In any sec
tion. There was no frost and the
wind prevented harm from the cold
rain.
“The crop is comparatively safe
now,” said Mr. Worsham, “Except
ing a few spots In North Georgia,
where the orchards were located In
the low valleys, it has not been hurt
in any section."
The damage done was not suffi
cient to have any appreciable effect
on the output and it Is reasonably
certain that the greatest harvest the
state has ever known will be reaped
this year. The forecast for tonight Is
not foreboding.”
The damage he spoke of occurred
from the cold of ten days ago.
