LUKEWARM OVER
BRYAN S CANDIDACY
Chatham Co. Democrats
See Defeat Ahead.
IS READY TO DISPOSE
OF CONVICTS AT LAST
> llfca*.
Savannah. Ga., July It.—(Special)
—That Chatham county Democrats
are lukewarm over the nomination of
iWIIllani Jennings Bryan for the
presidency was clearly shown yester
day when expressions from them were
solicited.
They were not surprised that the
Commoner was the choice of the con
vention, but they refused to enthuse
over him. Some powerful influence
will have to be brought to bear upon
them before they will be stirred out
of this apathy.
It would be surprising if the names
of the prominent Democrats who
say they Intend voting the Republican
ticket this year were published. For
business and other reasons these men
do not care to publicly express them
selves about the matter, but they do
not hesitate to say that the nominal,
tlon of Mr. Bryan makes certain the
election of Mr. Taft.
Democracy Was kidnapped
The Hon. W. W. Osborne, a power
ful local politician, thinks that Dem
ocracy was in close range of vic
tory if the party had not been kid
napped by the forceful personality of
Mr. Bryan. He thinks the party will
be defeated and that the chance to
win will not come again for at least
ten years.
”1 should say that at present we
have a good ship, sound plank and
timber and weather-wise," ho says.
“We have our bearings accurately and
the wind is fair; but we have a pilot
who has already demonstrated that
he knows not the course.”
When asked for his views on Dem
ocracy's chances he said:
"The Democratic party has been
kidnapped by a forceful personality
just at the moment when the presi
dency was within easy reach. We
don’t have as good a chance to win
again within the next ten years. 1
believe the party will again bo de
feated decisively, and I think the
defeat can be fairly attributed to the
unwise selection of the standard
bearer. •
“On the whole, the platform is an
excellent declaration of principles. No
one questions Mr. Bryan’s great abil
ity, or his magnificent personality.
We are all astounded at his marvel
ous dominance over Democratic
thought. But, the majority” of the
conservative voters in the United
States cannot, and will not forget
that Mr. Bryan was radically and In
excusably wrong upon the currency
question—probably the most vital pub
lic questron affecting the prosperity
of our people.
“In His advocacy of the free and
unlimited coinage of silver at the
ratio of 16 to 1 Mr. Bryan pursued a
wlll-o'-the wisp’, and earnestly and
strenuously attempted to lead us in
to a financial quagmire, from which
we could not have escaped for genera
tions to come. His advice then meant
ruin-utter ruin.
"Mr. Bryan will never recover from
this stupendous and unpardonable
blunder. Confidence in. his ability as
a safe leader has been Anally des
troyed."
