Singleton told Wednesday the. story ot
the killing of the negro girl, Gray,
at his home near Americus the even
ing previous, an account of which ap
peared In the Times-Recorder yester
day. The article stated that Singleton
was attempting to shoot a woman
which, in reality, was his wife. The
two had quarreled, and dashing into
the house the brutal negro seized his
shotgun and returned to the scene.
Cocking the gun he leveled it at his
wife, but at the moment of firing the
woman’s brother, standing near,
gtruc'k at the gun in the hands of
the infuriated husband. The piece
was discharged, the entire load strik
ing the wife’s daughter by a former
marriage and killing her instantly.
The girl was about twelve years of
age, and had taken no part' In the
row between her mother and stepfa
ther. Singleton was overpowered
and brought to the county Jail here.
His fancy story of accidental killing
will not stand-him‘in great stead
upon his trial upon the charge of
murder.

HUNTINGTON.
(From our Regular Correspondent.)
Huntington, Ga., Aug. 13.—The cot
ton crop Is off 20 per cent around
Huntington due to the drought and
black root.
Sir. B. T, Johnson- has returned
tborlze the directors to make the sale*.
and advertise the property.
The purpose ot the sale is to gei
the property into the hands of some
individual who will look after it more
closely than a company Is able to -
do. The hotel, according to a state- -
ment ot one of the stockholders. Is
ln need of repair, and the company
Is unable to assume further liabili
ties in connection with the property.
While the property Is earning more
than enough to pay all charges, any
Improvements would have to come-
out of the pockets of the stockholders
In the event of its sale no change
whatever would be made in the pres
ent lease or in any contracts now
running.
"The hotel was originally built at
a cost of 1148,000,” said Pres. Wheat- ,
ley yesterday. “Later it was sold/
for $42,000 and then again for. $43^r
000. It is a fine proprty. At the?
present time the hotel is sadly In,
need of repairs.
“I have fully Investigated the af-‘
fairs of the company and the pro
perty, and have advised that the best
Interests of the stockholders and
creditors will be best conserved by
the sale of the property. I will lay
the facta before the stockholders,
with my conclusions, and ask that
the directors be empowered to ploct
the property on the market.
“It Is much to be desired by the-
clttzens of Americus that the hotel .
will pass Into the hands ot a single .
individual who will conduct the pro
perty to the best interests of all.
“The present lease will not of
course be disturbed. It has two or
three years more to run and a new
owner might still continue to lease
the property after the present lease
expires. The Improvements needed
would of course have to be made by
the owner and not by the lessee."
