Washington, Oct 26.—Somewhere .
between the years 1950 and 1955 the
last survivor of the great Civil War
may be expected to pass to his re
ward. Forty years henco the spec
tacle of an aged veteran who Is able
to say that he marched and fought as
one of the great armies that followed .
Grant or Sherman or Dee or Jafckson .
will be a rarity.
The question Is often asked, When
will the veterans of the Civil War all
he stricken from the rolls?
They will not all have passed for- •
ty years from now, but It may he ex- ,
pected that only here and there about
the country can a gray-halred and .
bowed centenarian bo found who will
he able to say he was at Shiloh or
Vicksburg or Atlanta, or la the des
perate struggle in the Wilderness.
But long before that, of course, the
number of Civil War survivors will bo 1
growing scarce.
Ten years from now, eveu, tho -
Grand Army will have a rapidly thin
ning membership. The numbor of
survivors of the Civil War on the pen-
slon roll st the close of the last fis
cal year wns 593,961. The numbor of
survivors of the Civil War whose
names were dropped from the roll on
account of death In the fiscal year’
that closed last June 30, was 32,831.
Long after the last veteran has
been dropped from the rolls by death
the widows will survive.
