WELLS RUNNING DRY
IN BRONWOOD DISTRICT
People Bringing Water
From the Creeks.
Rains Badly Needed in
a Large Section of
the Country.
COUNTY TO BUY GRAIN
AND STORE FOR STOCK
Home Market is Furnished
Farmers.
.Mr. C. E. Turner of the Bronwood
district was In the city yesterday on
business. Mr. Turner reports bad con
ditions In that part of the county re-
sulliug from the drought.
■ .Many of the wells in that section
have run dry." said Mr. Turner, "and
the people are compelled to bring
water, sometimes a considerable dis
tance, from the creeks and branches.
The water in them is also running
low, Heavy rains arc budly needed
and will be gladly welcomed.
“Everything needs water,” continued
Mr. Turner. “It Is getting dangerous
to go around some of the creeks on
account of the fear of running against
a snake drawn there by the deslro to
get water. One thing that has Impress
ed me as to the dryness of the earth
Is that when a little water is poured
down it is not many minutes before
there are a host of ants at It. 1 pre
sume that they, like everything else,
need water and find it difficult to get
it near the surface.
“Crops down our way are pretty
well picked." continued Mr. Turner.
"We made about a two-thirds crop of
cotton, 1 should say, but the high
prices have probably compensated us
for this. There is not much cotton
left in the Helds to be picked now, and
we can all take our time with the bal
ance. I have never known the crop
to he gathered so rapidly as It has
been In the Bronwood district this
year."

Dear Sir: Perhaps you can get
your house well painted lor half. If
we’re wrong In u certain matter, you
can.
We'll furnish the paint for half the
job; you get what you like for the
other half.
If Devoo half doesn't take less gal
lons, we'U give you the paint.
If Devoe half doesn't take less la
bor, we’ll pay for the labor.
If Devoe half doesn’t wear a year
longer, we'll give you the job. both
paint and labor.
Get a goor painter to do both halves
of the job; divide it In halves in a
way to be fair to both paints. We
want no advantage; we want u fair
deal.
A gallon saved Is the cost of that
gallon, $1.75. and the cost of the labor
of painting that gallon, from $2 to
$4. We reckon $5 for both.
If one paint wears three and the
other four years, the .saving by wear
Is one-third of the cost of the job; live
years, two-thirds: six years, the whole
Job. We’d like to know which is
which, and are willing to try. Yours

The county commissioners of Sum
ter are "in the market" to buy every
ton of peavlne hay produced in the
counts. and In addition thereto will
buy from farmers here a thousand
bushels or more of home-grown corn,
both feedstuffs to be devoured at the
barn stockade here. The value of well
cured peavlne hay as feed for stock
is well recognized, and the commis
sioners are more than willing to buy
at good prices a quantity sufficient to
feed the county's one hundred line
mules for a year. The corn supply
will he used as stock feed and prob
ably ground into meal, as well for
the convict forces, as thd home raised
corn is infinitely superior to the dis
eased stuff so often shipped here from
the WeBt and consumed as meal. This
step upon the part of the commission
ers Is highly commended. They not
only safeguard the county's Interests,
financially, by purchasing feed sup
plies In quantity at this season, when
prices rule lower than In the summer,
but they likewise safeguard the health
of man and beast in the county's em
ploy in furnishing a better article for
food consumption.
Vast quantities of peavlne hay was'
produced in Sumter county this year,
and f#r this hay, baled and delivered
in Americus, the commissioners are
paying $16 per ton, cash, or 80 cents
per hundred in lesser quantity. In
making such purchases the board does
not confine itself to Sumter-grown
products alone, but will buy from
farmers in other counties.
