TANKS ARE FAILING AS
RESULT OF DROUGHT
Several on Seaboard Are
Giving Out.
Seaboard Railway engineers are
watching the weather bureau closely
and hoping for rain to fill the streams
from which the water tanks ure re
plenished. At several points between
Americus, Montgomery and Savannah
tho tanks have failed entirely, and en
gines have to make long runs to the
few water stations yet available. Tbe
Ohoopee river, where a tank is locat
ed, has actually dried up and ceased
to flow, while several smaller streams
are rapidly failing. Of course the
water supply at Americus and the ter

of these may collapse as well unless
relief cotaos shortly. There has been
no delay In schedules as yet on ac

WILL BE DISCUSSED.
At Meeting of Methodists In Waynes,

Methodists of Americus are Inter
ested In the forthcoming session of
the South Georgia Conference assem
bling at Waynesboro on December
5th, as at this meeting will be dis
cussed tbe proposed division of the
conference body.
It Is pointed out by those who are
urging this action that the South
Georgia Conference has become too
large for ono jurisdiction and that It
should bo divided.
It is said that the ministers and lay
men in attendance at sessions is too
large to entertain them.
A more cogent reason for the di
vision ot the conference is that the
present division has difficulty In look
ing after the interests of Its many
ministers and charges, who number
more than Ovo hundred.
While it is not likely that there will
he any change at this time, the ques
tion will he discussed and a commit
tee may be appointed to prepare .i
report for the 1910 Bcsslon.

ture specially In her farmers, and, as
a result, it has established what U
termed the "Farmers' Co-operative
Demonstration Work," and which al
ready Is being inaugurated upon farms
here in Sumter county.
The farmers are being asked to con
duct the work ot preparing their
lands, fertilizing, planting, cultivat
ing and gathering their crops as tho
department shall direct. Each farm
er can take as many acres as he de
sires, so It Is not less than two acres.
Usually 4 or 5 acres are taken and
tlis rest of the farm conducted as pre
viously. In this way a comparison of
results can be had.
Tho three most Important points
stressed are deep fall preparation if
the land with n disc plow If possible,
frequent cultivation and seed selec
tion.
In other counties In Georgia, where
the demonstration work has been con
ducted, records of from 50 to 110
bushels of corn per acre where 10 to
15 bushels was the average, and from
1 to 3 bales of cotton per acre where
a bale to 3 acres was the average
have been made.
Sumter county has as good land as
can be found In the state, and no doubt
her record for another year will be
quite as good as thst of any other
county.
Mr. G. V. Cunningham of Americus,
the agent for the department In Sum
ter, will visit each one of the demon
strators, as the farmers who take up
the work are called, once each month,
and will assist In any way possible
and offer any suggestions he may see
fit.
There is no charge for the service,
or any extra expense in doing tie
work. Farmers who are anxious to
become better farmers and are wilt
ing to do tho work os directed are
wanted. Many have already gone Into
the work. Those Interested might
write Mr. Cunningham; he Is very
much interested in tho owrk and will
tnke great pleasure In explaining '•
