Death In the flames was the terrible
fate of Miss Babe Hogue, an aged lady
residing Ill Hast Americus, at 3 o'clock
Monday morning, life being extinct
when other occupants of the house, at
tracted hy her groans, reached the
room, but too late to render any as
sistance.
Miss Hogue was sitting in front of
the open fireplace, her chair and cloth
ing enveloped In fire.
Mr. John Oliver, with whose family
she resided, was first to view the
shocking scene and call other mem
bers of the household to come to Miss
Hogue’s rescue. ,
But It was too late, as life was about
extinct and the agony endured by tho
poor lady was ended. The fire was
extinguished and a physician summon
ed, but the victim of the flames was al
ready beyond human aid or endeavor.
Just how the Are was communicated
to her clothing Is a matter of surmise
only.
Miss Hogue, who was well advanced
in years and feeble as well, oftlmes sat
late at nlgbt by her fire, and the sup
position Is that her dress caught from
the open grate and, enveloped'by the
flames, she was too weak or too much
frightened to call for help.
She was about 5S years of age and
had long resided in Americus. Tho
funeral took place from her home
Monday afternoon.

The readers of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there is at least
one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that Is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is
the only positive cure now known to
the medical fraternity. Catarrh being
constitutional disease, requires
constitutional treatment. Hall's Ca
tarrh Cure is taken Internally, acting
directly upon the blood and mucous
surfaces of the system, thereby de
stroying the foundation of the disease,
and giving the patient strength by
building up the constitution and as
sisting nature in doing Its work. The
proprietors have so much faith in its
curative powers that they'offer One
Hundred Dollars for any case that It
falls to cure. Send for list of testimon
ials. Address:

'AO." COLLEGES OF GEORGIA
ARE MAKING FINE PROGRESS.
Value of the Eleven Schools Now Ex
ceeds Million Dollars.
The Agricultural College In Ameri
cus, the Third District school, Is easily
taking rank as one of the leading in
stitutions of the eleven established by
the state. In point of attendance It al
ready stands at the head of all of the
colleges.
Prof. Joseph Stewart, state agent
for the University of Georgia, has
compiled data with regard to the prog
ress made by the eleven district
schools whfch began operations In
Georgia but little more than two years
ago.
The value of the school properties
$1,000,000. In their llrst year they
received from the state $4,400 each,
which was increased to $0,600 and
last year to $9,600. This money came
from funds arising from the Inspection
of oils and fertilizers.
The Legislature also gave ‘them $2,-
000 each from the general fund In the
treasury for 1909.
During 1909 these eleven schools
produced $10,000 worth of farm prod
ucts on 725 acres under cultivation.
The attendance for the school year In
all schools aggregated 1,008.
Sumter county Is finally to have
map, one that will give the full de
tails of the county and cover the re
quirements of all who are Interested I
the business affairs or the agriculture
or the development In anyway of the
county.
Messrs. R. E. L. Freeman and Thom
as H. Greaney, representing tho Hud
gins Company, map publishers of At
lanta, arrived Monday and will begin
work on the proposed map at once.
A preliminary canvass is being made
for subscriptions to tho map. This
will take but two or three days. There
Is hardly a doubt but that a sufficient
number will be disposed of. The two
surveyors came prepared to start
without any unnecessary delay on the
field work.
The map will be on a sufficiently
large scale to show every feature of
the country distinctly. The militia
districts, the school districts, the rail
roads, the streams, the public roads,
the rural free delivery mall routes, the
churches, school houses, bridges, the
principal plantations, all of these will
be displayed upon the map. Once It Is
completed It will be possible to deter
mine the exact location of every resi
dence and plantation In the county.
The map will be of great value to
citizens generally. Its need has long
been felt and the fact that In three or
four months one will be In readiness
for delivery to subscribers Is agreeable
news to hundreds of business men,
planters and others.
It Is not unlikely that this company
will also make a proposition to the
City Council to prepare a new city map
In co-operation with the city engineer.
