of prosperity has carried more money
Into the banks as deposits than ever
known before. From every town and
city comes the cheering news that the
banks are abundantly provided with
the coin of the realm.
Tbo Americas banks, as the Tlmes-
Recorder stated a few days since, have
cash deposits exceeding two million
dollars.
A flattering condition among Georgia
state banks is shown by the compila
tion which has just been completed In
tbe state bank examlnlg bureau of the
treasury department
This gives comparatively statistics
for 1907, when the bank examlng law
went into effect, and 1909.
It shows that at the close of 1909
there were 604 banks In the state, ex
clusive of national hanks, as against
448 In 1907, an increase of 50. The
total of liabilities and assets is shown
to be $108,(25,980.93 for 1909, which Is
an increase of over $22,000,000 upon
the showing of 1907.
Following are some other compar
ative statistics:
loans and discounts, 1907, $50386,-
304.20;; 1909, $70,886343; Increase,
$20300,038.80. Cash on hand, 1907,
$16,191,089.85; 1909, $6344.639.79. This
condition is accounted for by the fact
that during the panic year, 1907, tbe
banks held on to all their cash and Is
sued clearing house certiflcates.
Capital, $17335,(79.66, in 1907; $20.-
228,453.05, In 1909. Amount due depos
itors. 1907, $48,707,739.02; 1909, $66.-
775,714.57.

dipped her in the Mississippi river, ac
cording to his own testimony In the
divorce case Instituted by her.

This Week.
The criminal session of tbo city
court closed Saturday, with the usual
rich harvest ready for tho chaingang.
Many fines wero assessed by Judge
Crisp, while 4u other cases straight
shots to the gang were made.
it has been a busy week for Solic
itors Williams and Childers, and while
a few got through the nets, the gang
caught the majority.
The following cases have thus been
disposed of this week, all the defend
ants convicted being negroes:
Arthur Dowdell, simple larceny;
twelve months or $75.
Dudley Floyd, stabbing; twelve
months or $75.
Ap Roberta, gaming; twelve months
or $55.
Ed Little, blind tigering; a straight
shot of eight months In tho atudy of
good roads building.
Sheppard Rozler, larceny from
peion; twelve months or $200.
William Ideistt, larceny from house;
found not guilty.
"Red" Oliver, rolling tho bones;
gaming, 12 months or $60.
Fed Stokes, lugging n pistol, twelve
months or $100.
B. Lockett, simple larceny; tea
months as a straight shot
Joe Davis and Henry Martin, charg
ed with pistol toting, got off on not
guilty verdict, as did Martin on a
second charge of gambling.
Sherman Leggett's concealed piste!
cost him $40 or six months.
Jerry Lucas, for disturbing divine
worship, will pay $40 Into the contri
bution basket or do real work for eight
months In the matter of good roads.
Edgar Hurley, gaming; $45 or
eight months In the gang.
Cliff Cody, ilmple larceny; six
months or tbe court costs as line.
Tom Allen, lugging a pistol; twelve
months or a line of $100.
Homer Green and Joe Patterson,
charged with pistol toting, got off on
verdict of not guilty, as did J. R. Jones
on a ilka charge.
Civil business will be resumed by
the coyrt next week.

Iladly Damaged In Trestle Wreck Last

Seaboard engine 658, which was
wrecked at a burned trestle above
Richland a few days ago, has besn
hauled to the Amerlcus shops for re
pairs. Tbe engine was pretty well
stripped of Its outer parts, but will
soon be in service again. It Is said
that No. 658 is something of n hoodoo.
It killed one engineer on the main
stem before coming to tho Americas
division, and n second engineer hers
want to his death in n wreck while
holding her throttle. Engineer Lee
had n most miraculous escape whan
