March 17th, "St. Patrick's Day In
fho Mornibg" and just forty days In
tho future, is the date selected by the
democratic executive committee for
the primary election in Sumter county
at which the qualified voters of Amor-
Icus and the county at large will
name their county officers.
The committee met at the court
house Saturday morning with eight
of the twelve members present, Chair
man E. A. Nlsbet presiding.
The members in attendance were
Messrs. E. A. Nisbet, W. B. Heys, N.
A. Ray, W. A. Webb. J. J. Wilson. Ed
ward Timmerman, F. A. Wilson, A. W.
Buchanan. Two other members, seen
later, acquisced heartily i nthe action
thus taken by the committee.
Thursday, March 17th, was selected
as the date at which county officers
only will be nominated.
In view of the large number of elec
tions to be held this year the demand
for an early primary for county offi
cers, free from other entanglement,
was very general, and the action of
the committee in naming a date forty-
days hence will afford all time re
quired and meet general approval.
The county officers to be nominated
this year arc sheriff, clerk of court,
treasurer, tax collector, tax receiver,
surveyor, coroner and county school
commissioner.
The assesnients of candidates for
election expenses are; sheriff $30;
clerk of court $30; treasurer $20; tax
collector $25; tax receiver $20; school
commissioner $15; surveyor $:
coroner $2.
At this early date there is no fore
casting the number of candidates who
may enter the race, but it is a fair
assertion that several of Sumter's
able officials will have no opposition
at all. Throughout the list, no county-
in Georgia has a cleaner or more com
petent corps of officers.
But the race is open to al who may-
care to enter of course.
The committee ruled that all white
democratic voters who are now on the
1909 registration list, or who have
since qualified, or who may qualify up
to and including the day of election,
nrc entitled to vote therein for county
officers of Sumter at the primary
March 17.
Assessments must be paid by candi
dates to the chairman of the commit
tee on or before March 7th, to have
their names upon the ticket.

Mr. D, O. Zeigler, of D. G. Zeigler
& Co., consulting engineers, of Savan
nah and Jacksonville, was in the city
yesterday afternoon for a short time,
accompanied by Mr. Carl Mendel, a
well known real estate man of Savan
nah. They came to Amadeus from
Cordeie, having spent tho morning in-
specting some lands on the line of the
Flint river, at its junction with Swift
creek, where the three counties of
Lee, Worth and Crisp have their June
tlon point, near the Warwick station
on the Albany & Northern railroad.
Mr. Zeigler represents Northern in
vestors who contemplate putting in
a power plant on the Flint river at
the point mentioned. It was to look
over the situation there that he made
the trip, having previously visited
that section some days ago. It is un
derstood that options have been se
cured on considerable land abutting
on the stream. There is a considera
ble fail in the Flint river at this point,
and by putting 1 na dam a fall of
thirty or more feet can be secured,
This, Mr. Zeigler stated yesterday. It
had been worked out would give u
continuous electric power equivalent
to 16,000 commercial horse power.
If the project goes through It is the
purpose of the company that has the
matter under consideration to put In
a plant that will be capable of meeting
the needs of the country for fifty miles
around. It Is hoped to enter Americus
and other towns and furnish power
for lighting and industrial purposes
The plant would be built so that it
could be readily added to as the de
mand for power grew.
How the promoters propose to fi
nance the project is not known. It
ie understood that the bonds can be
floated satisfactorily with northern
houses that are interested ill other
water power projects in this section.
It Is not unlikely that an effort will
be made to dispose of some of the
stock in this section It is claimed
that power could be generated very
cheaply at tho plant proposed and
that it could easily meet ail require
ments of a very extensive territory.
It is intimated that negotiations are
under way with the S. A. L. to furnish
power for the shops here if the plant
is erected, and that if this is done the
shops here may have their operations
broadened.
The outcome of the project will oe
awaited with much Interest In Amer
lcus nnd other points in this terri
tory.
