Monday was the time limit fixed by the county executive committee wherein the host of candidates for county offices could pay the assess ments levied for the expenses of the primary of March 17th, and thus get into the game. And every sprinter came across with the long green. Thus virtually closes the list of en tries. as the election tickets will be printed at once and other election de tails arranged as well. There at e a dozen or more aspirants for the half dozen offices available, and the candidates who are on the job already, as well a3 those anxious to land a gold hertld are hustling some, with their friends interviewing the able voter. Sheriff Feagin will cut his melon alone, as will Clerk Allen and Tax Collector Small, neither of these offi cers having opposition. Tax Receiver Speer Is opposed by Mr. J. P. Raiford and Mr. J. T. How ell, while Treasurer Williams has Mr. J. A. Pinkston as his opponent. County School Commissioner Moore is ipposed by Prof. R. E. White. Tlvis is the first time the school commis sioner lias been elected by the voters. County Surveyor Howe and Coroner Jenkins have a cinch on their jobs, j having no opposition. SEED! SEED! New York, March' 7.—Records of the purchases made by the Pennsylvania and New Haven railways of land need ed for the New York connecting bridge have Just been filed In the Queen’s county clerk’s office. They show th ecost of the land ac quired to be more than $10,000,000. The big bridge will link the two great railroad systems by a span across the river at Hell Gate and thie Bronx Hills, and to do this a right of way has been purchased In Queen's borough from the Scaly Rock ond the Astoria shore to the terminal of the bridge In the Second ward. The waters of Hell Gate are most treacherous, for It Is here that the river and sound currents meet, rais ing up breakers and foam. The span of the bridge at this point will be 1.000 feet long and 135 feet above the water. The two unknown white men ar rested here Saturday evening upon warrants charging vagrancy may answer other and more serious charg es, as additional evidence that may convict one of them of attempting as sault upon a young girl was received yesterday. The sheriff’s office and police de partment are working upon the case very effectively. One of the men, it Is alleged, seized hold of a young white girl and was only beaten off by her cries and those of her little brother, who saw the al leged act. It is said that the men approached the house of the young girl, about 11 or 15 years of age, and asked for drink of water. As she handed one of the the dipper she states that he seized her by the arms and offered to em brace and kiss her, greatly frightening the young lady. The man. It is said, cursed her out rageously, using the most Insulting and abusive language, which the girl told Sheriff Feagin she couldn’t peat. She lives out upon the suburbs here, and is an orphan. It was for this offence the men were arrested by the police, to whom in formation was phoned. As the police officers started to make the arrest the men hurriedly took papers from their pockets and tore them Into small bits as though to conceal their Identity, throwing the torn papers upon the ground, But Sheriff Feagin and Officer Tins ley were not to be thus thwarted. The bits of paper were all gathered to gether, carefully sorted, pasted to ;- gether in legible form, and from read ing the several notes the officers learned of “a woman In the case" and other things as well. Sheriff Feagin thinks he has a pair of professionals and will hold them accordingly. Soldier Dalks Death Plot. It seemed to J. A. TRAINS COLLIDE OX CENTRAL; ONE KILLED IN SMASH-l’P Passenger Train and Freight Disastrously. Mixed Damage to the Little Automobile Con- sldcrable. He charging his electric car Sunday morning Mr. Frank Harro.'d wellnight sustained the loss of his in a head-on collision between northbound passenger train No. 12 and a southbound freight near Bar ron's Lame, four miles north of Mon tezuma, early Sunday morning one life was lost, while several passengers sustained bruises. The trains came together with con siderable force and both engines and the express car on the passenger train were demolished. Not one of th^ passengers aboard N'o. 12 was seriously hurt. The man killed was a colored express helper. Will McRae, who was killed In bis car. The passenger train had slowed down, as the engineer saw the fast approaching freight, else the fatali ties might have been greater. Both engineers jumped and escaped In jury. Passengers were thrown from tbalr scats, but nona were seriously Injured. The collision resulted from the crew of the freight train forgetting or overlooking the northbound passen ger train.
