THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES RECORDER. TH URSDAY. MARCH 17.1910
TO HELP SMALL
INDUSTRIES HERE
Plan to Build lip Our Man
ufactures.
Would Enlist the Sup
port of Large Num
ber of Citizens.
A group of Americus business men
were discuss ag the outlook tor the
city's grewth yesterday and plans that
might >>e worked looking to a (roster
development of Its industries. Tbe
opluion seemed to oe general that II
was necessary to Inaugurate some
public movement, enlisting tbe flnsn
cial suppott of a number of citizens,
and that instead of waiting for some
great mill or other industry on
extensive scale to be established, re-
i qulrlng tbe raising of several hundred
thousands of dollars, tbe movement
[should have for Us purpose tbe star:*
ling of small Industries and the crea
tion of a fund for that purposes.
There Is no more live topic at this
time in Americus, and none that is of
treater and more pressing importance.
The ways and means were considera
bly discussed and finally a plan wat
proposed by Mr. Thomas U Bell that
teemed to meet with moro general
ptance than any other and tli
ras voted as having about It the ap
pearance of a thoroughly practicable
[roject:
'I think it is useless for us to wait
til Americus can raise 1200,000 or
to get a large cotton mill,” said
r. Bell. "What I believe we should
is to follow the example of other
ies and secure a number of small
|(lurries. To that end we should have
Industrial fund, raised by our clti-
is. to be invested in stock in en-
Irprises of this character that have
pout them the ear marks of a prob-
He success. We could, I should
(ink, secure fifty to one hundred citl-
|ns, progressive men eager to take
}rt In the building up of the city,
members of such a corporation.
|ch citizen would pay Into tbe treas-
$10 a month and recelvo for It a
re of stock. This would give us,
a basis of 100 members, $1,000 a
fntli income, to be applied in assist-
In tho establishment of small In-
•tries. Take the broom factory pro'
•Won, for instance. It has been
f*n that broom corn can be satis-
raised around here. Now
>ms and whisks are articles of
•dy consumption. Every bouse-
r in Americas and in every other
and house In the country, is a
of brooms to some extent. There
demand all around us for aril-
that could be made from a crop
right here at home. My Idea
>t an aasociatton organised along
| lines referred to would take stock
broom manufactory, investing
of Its money in that way. Sup-
It put 12,000 or 13,000 la such
| Industry. That would take hut
or three months of Ita income,
•tockholders would have the atock
broom factory in the treasury
part of their assets. They would
represented In tbe management of
concern. So It would be with
; r smaI1 Industries. As these In-
|rlci became succesaful the stock
he sold and the proceeds ap-
to assisting |„ the establishment
ier small industries,

Atlanta, Ga., March 15.—Governor
Brown, who was to have introduced
Peary, the alleged discoverer of the
north pale, to an Atlanta audience to

form that function, giving as his rea
son that Lto does not consider the
claims put forth by Peary to be trust
worthy. In crude English, Governor
Brown regards Peary as a fakir, and
he gives his reasons for so believing
