Fighting with the ferocity of a wild
beast and Impelled to desperation by
knowledge of the certain punishment
awaiting his return to the chaingang
Sam Thompson, who escaped the pen
here Thursday night, was overpow
ered after a hard struggle and carried
back there yesterday.
It required the combined strength
of three men to manage the frantic
zebra and carrot h'm.
Thompson escaped from the stock-
ado on Forsyth street early at night,
when the guards were watching the
unharnessing of tho teams. ,
All day Friday to lay out In the
woods beyond tho Roney place where
a negro “farm student," 8ylvanus Elli
son, accommodatingly cut the shackles
from Thompson's legs, according to
the story of the convict.
For thus assisting a prisoner tc
escape EUaon was Jugged yesterday,
and may draw a little term In the pen
for himself If Thompson's story proves
true.
Late Friday night one of the convict
guards, while cruising on Jackson
street, north, saw Thompson step up
on the rear veranda of a residence
He seized the surprised “zebra” and a
desperate fight resulted. In which the
guard is said to have gotten the heavy
end of It.
Thompson, It Is said, was choking
the guard badly when his cries for as
sistance brought two citizens to the
rescue. Thompson fought like a tiger
to the finish.
He Is serving a ten-year sentence
and Is a bad negro generally. The
shackles cut from his legs In the
Roney woods were found yesterday
buried under a stump. Sylvanus Elli
son denied Thompson's story to the
effect that he cut the shackles from
his limbs with) the point of a plow.
Ho will bo held for trial at the May
term of Superior court.
