PURER EOOD IS GIVEN
UNDER THE STATE LAW I
BIG DOCKET IS WAITING
OPENING OF COURT
Corn. Hudson Makes Re
port to Gov. Brown.
I Seventy Two Crimes Thus
Charged.
Hun. Thomas (1. Hudson, state coin
anissioner of agriculture returned to
■Atlanta yesterday after a stay of sev-
-oral days at his home in Amerlcus
looking after his large farming Inter
ests in Sumter and Schley and m ngl
■;ng with his host of friends in botli
counties.
.Commissioner Hudson has Just filed
r'vith tiov. Brown the annual report for
■■ -aie department ending in December
fanst.
'One of the most interesting features
* of the report is the statement of P. A
Methivin, state pure food inspector, of
the excellent progress which has been
made in improving the grade of food
products sold in the state under the
pure food and drugs act passed by the
legislature Ihst year.
Inspector Metlrvin shows that be has
carefully inspected the food and feed
?ng stuffs placed on sale in this state
and while numerous violations of the
law have been detected, a word to the
'manufacturer or the producer lias
proven effective In most cases and the
' grade of the articles offered for sale
has been made to conform to the pry
vision of the law.
State Drug Inspector T. A. Cheatham
also submits an interesting report
showing that rigid enforcements of the
• drug law ha3 practically removed from
the market in thfs state all drugs
which do not conform with thfe law.
Dr. R. E. Stallings, state chemist
shows that with the passage of the
pure food “and drugs act the work of
his department ha3 increased enor
mously and he urges that some pro-
" vision be made for increasing the force
of employes.
The amount of work done by State
■Entomologist E. I, Worsham covers a
.vide range for the year, and in spite
of the constantly increasing demand
. for inspections of orchards, growing
- crops and shade and ornamental trees
on private estates, tbe work has be'en
lone thoroughly and well. Great
progress has geen made in stamping
' out the Sau Jose scale, the "“black
root” or wilt disease of cotton, and
diseases of fruit and crops.
The quarterly session of the City
court, with Judge Crisp presiding, op
ened yesterday, but by conseut all civil
business was passed for the week, and
the session adjourned until Saturday
morning next for ti.ie appearance

IS FOUGHT XEAR TYBEE
.Amerlcus Jinn Witnesses the Fierce
Struggle There.
T)r. P. P. Bahnsen returned to Amer
Jtcus yesterday from Savannah, where
he attended the state meeting of Red
Mem and tells a thrilling story of an
adventure n party of the Red Men bad
with a sea monster while fishing off
Tybee. Judge Arnold, of Monroe,
hooked the monster, which made an
attempt to ram the boat and .was on
ly prevented by the united efforts of
■he crew. Constantly tbe large, nrm-
-■ ike proturberances wound themselves
about the boat rails and anchor chains
