, [Written for the "Knt«rpris*."]
A rose, without thorns, is not
complete; so a life without’troubles
and cures, Is Incomplete, and I of-
times think, some men are afraid
the tives of their women “at home”
will be terribly incomplete, by the
way they heap on tin thorns.
You love the beautiful rose bloom-
lug at your side, yei all her i t f e
obtrugh, you surround her with
thorns, ever and anon adding some
new one.
You are not kind like nature, she
turnes tlie sharpe points outward;
you turn them all in. You prick
you sting your rose; your little
whims, your pet thorns .and
ling boobies, your plans and WMVS
that must not be disturbed, are the
slow tortures of the heart, and do
th«ir fatal work like poison admin-
istered In small, but continuous
j 0
Sometimes the bloom is entirely
choked out, leaving you only the
thorns, instead of the smile that us¬
ed to greet you, you get afrowu; all
tiia beauty and freshness gone-
nothing but dry hard thorns.
You need not blame circumstan¬
ces nor luck—blame your sc it you
made her what she is, now you
must endure where once you enjoy¬
ed, Often your rose once so iresh
and fair grows pale, withers and
fades, finally she falp shattered and
dead. Then you fold tired hands,
kiss tl.t ridged Gill lips close the
sad patient blue eyes and her down
to slumber in the “cold and silent
ground.”
Days afterwards with slow noise¬
less tread you near her grave place
your hands on the cold marble that
bears her name and age; crushed
and heart broken you bow your
head,and scatter soft smiling flow¬
ers over her grave tlie grave of her
whose life you paved with thorns
Your voice is low and sweet as
you murmur herns me; tlie voice
that smote with angers metalic
ring White she lived. Your eyes
are loving and tender and sulluseu
with tears the eyes that saw all her
faults aud failures and would not
see her many acts of self denial and
*ht* countless little hard thiugs she
did for you, e’er she laid the burden
down forever. You are .-ad and
lonely, you miss her.—

Mr. Cleveland has already stated
that lie would si3n any measure
