The Slanderer.
Who shall deliver u from the
slanderer? p rom the blasts of his
scorching breath there is no c\s-
cape. No life is safe from his sub-
tie attacks; no memory too sacred
nor no character too pure for him
to besmirch, Who ot us have not
felt our ears tingle and our checks
burn under his attacks? Coward
that he is he directs hip sharpest
arrows against the weakest of the
human race. Those whom he
should defend are made to feel the
crudest thrusts of liis pointed
tongue. Females, helpless and
pure, are his favorite victims. He
they without a protector in the
world they cannot hope tq escape
his poisonous barbs, With a heart
Steeped in darkness and a charac*
ter as degraded as the demons vir¬
tue and purity are to hjm a con
stant menace, There is 110 place
of retreat on this broad earth; no
asylum where the pursued can
hide from the vengeance of the
slanderer, There is no rqfuge
save beyond the dark rivvia within
the shining city. There we arc-
told shall the weak find
Strength and the persecuted be de¬
livered from the hand of their tor¬
mentors.
The Louisville Courier Journal
says; “Certain southern poiiti-
cians and newspapers ape already
putting on meful countenances
and whininj) about the injury
which the south will suffer at the
north because Joe Hhickburn
pulled the car of an impudent
blackguard, it is time this sort of
sniveling should cease. Neither
the south nor the north has any¬
thing to do with the recent episode
of the committee room. A man is
no less a man because he is a
southerner, nor is he compelled to
cringe before an insult because it
is offered by a man of northern
birth. The south is not a Uriah
Heep, and if it could successfully
enact that role it would not elevate
itself in the opinion of anybody
whose good opinion is worth
having.”
It is almost incredible, and yet
it is true, that for their supplies
the farmers of Georgia paid last
year at the rate of 78 per cent, in¬
terest—where they bought on
credit.
Commissioner Henderson has
made a report recently, and the
Atlanta Constitution says it shows
that the average cash price of ba¬
con for 1888 was 9.71 cents a
pound—the credit price 12.3. The
average credit was for four months.
Corn cash price 77 cents—credit
98 cents. ' r he advance is
price
about 26 per cent, for foitr months
credit, or 6.5 per month, or 78 per
cent, per annum.
i'he commissioner actually con-
gratulates the farmer on having
reduced the rate from 106 per
cent, last year to 78 per cent, this
rear. He attributes this encoiir-
kflig reduction to the ritou ol
the F armers’ Alliance
Things are curiously adjust oc -
when the representative of a class
of honest citizens feel called upon
to congratulate them on having
reduced the interest they pay on
the purchase of supplies that il on-
ly amounts to 78 per cent, a year.
Merely 11 s break when they Vn-e
to pay 12 per cent, a vear. ,

ting old, but talk about the lines
of care on his forehead. Lines of
care! humph! in nine cases out of
ten those lines were caused by J him
scolding his wife when dinner was
two minutes late, or when one of
those masculine buttons popped
off, and, oh, my, what a hullabaloo .
he sets up then! Hut nobody says
a word about lines of care on her
forehead. Oh, no!
A woman must always be just
>o, must look charming and sweet,
no matter how sour she reels; r she
must sing and play on thq piano
and say something nice to every,
body. Her dress must hang and
lit just so, have the latest puckei

dressed on 75 cents a week. She
can’t go out alone at night, as a
woman must be protected; she
can't be a Free Mason, as she’d
tell all about the goat and the
greased pig; she can’t go courting,
but must manage some way to get
married before she H twenty-five
or everybody will feel terribly
hurt over it and sigh and wonder
why she “don’t take” and all the
old maids and widows in the neigh
borhood will smile and nudge each
other.
A woman always has to go to
bed first in cold weather. He
wants to “finish this piece in the
paper, dear,” and waits until she
lias the sheets to comfortable
perature. She must always take \
care of the baby, even though the
first infantile wonder has multi-
plied into half a dozen. If it |

cutting teeth, paregoric, short j

she doesn’t keep her baby quiet,
and speaks as if she alone was to
blame lor all the racket.
When she feels bad nobody
tucks a shawl over her on the
couch; nor nobody J closes the door
more softly when her head is .
splitting with a headache.
