The printer ought to be better
protected in the matter of legal
advertising, especially the wild
land advertising. /Viter the lots
are all advertised a good many of
them are taken out by the owners,
who come up with the receipts
showing that the taxes have been
paid. Then our weak is lofit. The
fault lies somewhere, but we lose
the money. It strikes us that the
tax collector ought to be a little
more careful about issuing fi fas
against lots where the taxes have
been paid. A little care on his
part would save us a great deal of
trouble and expense every year.

We are strongly ip favor of a
change jn the manner of working

the hands are notified and they all

the time is consumed and the
streets gre not' benefitted much.

The Shooting of Itny.
There was a serious difficulty gt
the marble works last week be¬
tween Lafayette Ray and Wm.
Cornett. The latter came very
near getting killed by a rocck that
was thrown by Ray. The father
of Cornett swore out a warrant [or
Ray and the warrant was placed
in the hands of a bailiff who failed
to make the arrest, whereupon the
warrant was sent to the sheriff
with instructions to execute the
same at once. On Monday night
tiie sheriff, together with Samuel
Tate and Wm. McElroy, found
Ray at his home on Long Swamp,
near Stegall’s store. Ray saw tile-
officers coming and broke to run,
getting something like 65 yards
the start. He was several times
commanded to halt, but paid no
heed to the commands, whereupon
two shots were fired tp ^ca re-
Ray and make him stop and to the
surprise of those after him one
shot took effect in Ray’s leg, just
below the knee, making a slight
flesh wound. The parties who
were after him at once took Ray
back to his house and sent for Dr.
McClain who came and dressed
the wound. The officers remained
with him till next morning, Un-
derstanding that it wouid 'be 'diffi¬
cult fc ( r Ray to make a bond he
was left at his home for a few
days. Thy above is a statement
of the facts as given us by the
sheriff.
A Few of Them.
The man who thought he could
increase the size of his whip ami
decrease the size of his horse’s ra¬
tions qncl get a good amount of
work.
The m;m \yho hired help to save
a few dollars in wages.
The man \yho hail to stop work
ip, the field to cut stove wood.
The man who cultivated ten
acres with only manure enough
for five.
The man who thought he could
spend the money that should have
bought an overcoat for whiskey
and get the necessary warmth out
of it.
The man who kept a cur dog
worth fifty cents and had to pay
$20 for sheep killed by him.
These are a few of the gentle¬
men who have to jump about in
order to get reasons for thankful¬
ness unless they can appreciate
the value of the blessings they
have received in their experiences.
