Reflectloni* of a Bachelor*.
A man bluhos fora woman a lot
oftener than she blushes at him.
When a woman has nothing else
to wish for she begins to wish that
her husband was diff rout.
The trouble with 1 <y is that
you always have troubb* with it.
If women had pockets they
would be a lot more likely to keep
their hands where they belong.
As soon as a man gets so lie can
afford to keep a hired girl his wife
begins to go visiting and talk
about the trouble she has with the
servants.
The first tiling ICve said
they got outside of the Garden of
Eden was, probably, that no mat
ter how nice it was she always did
hate to lie cooped up in there.
It is really disgusting to hear a
woman with a house■'ui of hungry,
dirty children, and a loafing bus
band, bragging on \vhnt they
would do if they Mere able.
No children are as pretty and
smart to a woman a her own, no
matter how filthy and foul
tongued they are.
When a man stands up to get
married he looks to the women
like a hero, but ho looks to the
men like a curly-haired bull at a
fairwith a pink ribbon t i<*<l to his
horns.—Ex.
ANCIENT ARITHMETIC.

11,000 Year. A»u.
Probably the oldest copy book for
home lessons in arithmetic was recent
ly unearthed In Egypt. The papyrus,
which was found In excellent condi
tion, dates from tlie period nbyut 1700
B. C.—that Is, about 100 years before
the time of Moses, or almost 3,000
years ago. It proves that the Egyp
tians had a thorough knowledge of
elementary mathematics almost to the
extent of our own. The papyrus has
a long heading. "Direction liow to at
tain the knowledge of all dark things,"
etc. Numerous examples show that
their principal operations with entire
units and fractions were made by
means of addition and multiplication.
Subtractions and divisions were not
ltnowu In their present form, but cor
rect results were obtained nevertheles s.
Equations are also found In the p.,
pyrus. Among the examples given is
this one: Ten measures of barley are
to bo divided among ten persons In
pueh a manner that, each subsequent
person receives one-eighth of a meas
ure less than the one before him. An
other example given is: There are sev
en men. each ouc has seven cats, each
cat has eaten seven mice, each mouse
has eaten seven grains of lmrlcy, each
grain of barley would, If cultivated,
have yielded seven measures of barley,
liow much barley has been lost In that
way?
The papyrus also contains calcula
tions of area, the calculation of the
area of a circle and its transformation
Into a square, and finally calculations
of the cubic measurements of pyra
mids.—Philadelphia Record.

Admiral John Itjuig was the fourth

admiral of the red In 17-lk, when he
was 44 years old. In 1750 he was sent
with a badly equipped fleet to relieve
Minorca, threatened by the French.
He reached Minorca alter the French
had got there, lli* second in com

back, while Ryug kept his ships out of
action. In a day or tDo he sailed to
Gibraltar, leaving Minorca to its fate.
He was tried for treachery and cow
ardice, but acquitted. The court mar

his best to relieve the island, and un
der the application of aVtiele 12 of the
British naval code of those days he
was condemned to be shot. The min

was shot on the quarter deck of his
own flagship, the Monarqne, In Ports

Railroads in Aftia.
The lints of railway now existing
in Asia form a total length of about

In China, a number of European

for 3,600 miles of railroad, which will
