Q: Can you give a few tips on
storing winter vegetables?
A: Here are tips for a few com
mon ones. Different vegetables
require different temperatures and
humidity levels for proper storage:
Turnips: Wash roots; trim tops to
1/2 inch and place in perforated
plastic bags and store in refrigera
tor, cold moist cellar or pit. Storage
life is two to four months.
Broccoli: Store in perforated
plastic bag for up to one week in the
refrigerator.
Cabbage: Store cabbage in
refrigerator, cold cellar or outdoor
pit in plastic bags for up to two
months.
Collards, kale, mustard and
spinach: Greens do not store well,
but may be kept in plastic bags in
the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Q: How do I recycle leaves in
my winter garden beds?
A: Rototill a layer of leaves into
the garden to prepare the soil for
winter. Spread leaves only a few
inches at a time and mix into the
soil. Then repeat once or twice
more if you have enough leaves. If
you try to spread them too thick
they won’t be as easy to rototill in.
Here in the South, our relative
warm winters allow for continued
decomposition over winter. Finish
off the beds by covering them with
a layer of leaf mulch. By spring
your garden is ready for planting.
Simply rake the leaves off the bed
surface and into the walkways,
allow the soil to warm for a week or
so and plant.
Q: I have chickweed growing in
my garden. How do I get rid of it?
A: Rich garden soil often hosts
chickweed, a little white-flowered
weed that’s easily plucked when it’s
small. Cut lawn weeds from their
roots with a thin knife blade, taking
care to avoid disturbing the soil
which can invite more weeds.
Q: I’ve got gnats in my house
and they seem to be coming from
my houseplants. What can I do to
get rid of them?
A: It could be that they came
into your house in a poinsettia pot
or perhaps you’ve had them since
you brought your houseplants inside
months ago. Those tiny flies that
live in potted plants are called fun
gus gnats. The main reason to get
them under control is that they can
seriously damage seedlings being
grown indoors. Big houseplants can
withstand fungus gnat larvae feed
ing on their roots, but for spindly
little seedlings, fungus gnats are a
life-threatening pest. Fungus gnats
can be controlled using the botani
cal pesticide Bacillus thuringiensis
israelensis, sold as Gnatrol, but
good luck in luring the larvae can
also be had with raw potatoes. Poke
pieces of raw, peeled potato a half
inch into the soil and collect them
three days later. With a magnifying
glass, you can often see the squirmy
larvae that have been drawn to the
potato lures.
Yellow sticky traps are often rec
ommended for capturing the adults
and they probably work quite well.
But notice how adult fungus gnats
often drown themselves in plain
water, try using a yellow saucer
filled with water. Each day empty
the dead gnats. Three weeks after
starting these gentle interventions,
the fungus gnats should be gone.

Q: How can I keep squirrels
from digging up my bulbs?
A: In neighborhoods where
squirrel populations are high, bushy
tails often start digging bulbs as the
acorn supply wanes. Sprinkle red
pepper over beds planted with
tulips, hyacinth and crocus bulbs or
cover them with chicken wire. Daf
fodils are naturally resistant to
squirrels.
Q: What can be done to control
Japanese beetles?
A: No quick fixes can rid home-
owners of the Japanese beetle once
it becomes established. However,
scientists with the US Department
of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricul
tural Research Service and Animal
and Plant Health Inspection Service
have developed an integrated pest
management (IPM) program for
homeowners based on field experi
ences. The program combines bio
logical, cultural and chemical strate
gies. It will be effective if home-
owners are willing to monitor both
adult and larval beetle populations
closely and implement this program
with neighbors and their local agri
cultural or horticultural organiza
tions. For more information visit
their website publications at
http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov. Once
you arrive at this page use the
search engine on the left side and
your key words will be Japanese
beetles. If you do not have Internet
access contact 800-282-5852.
