Minister’s
Comer
By Parker Benson
Tate UMC
Jesus of Nazareth went to
church. He still goes to church. He
comes to yours and mine every time
we meet. While on earth, it was
Jesus’ custom to attend church
every Sabbath day (LK 4.16). He
began this custom as a child and
continued the practice as an adult.
Remember when Jesus got separat
ed from his parents because he was
in the Temple? When they found
Him, He said, “Did you not know I
must be in my Father’s house?”
How about you? Do you make
church attendance your “custom?”
Is it a regular part of your week? Do
you attend church every Sabbath
day?
One man was asked why he went
to church: “You may as well ask me
why I eat or why I sleep,” he
replied. “One is just as important as
the other.”
Research backs him up. A study
of black inner-city youth by Har
vard University found that boys
who regularly attend church are 50
percent less likely to commit
crimes, 54 percent less likely to use
drugs and 47 percent less likely to
drop out of school. Regular church
attendance has many benefits, not
the least of which is a positive
impact on family and society.
There are other benefits. It is in
church that we sing the sacred
Hymns and hear the Word of God
preached and proclaimed. In church
we fellowship with other Christians
who encourage us as we encourage
them. It is in church that we wor
ship and experience the presence
and love and magnitude of God.
On the pages of this newspaper
are numerous possibilities of local
churches where you might attend
services this Sunday. If you do not
regularly attend church, how about
picking a church to attend this Sun
day? I think you’ll be glad you did.
