ber that a new year has begun and
to write the year 2003? It is hard to
break old habits. I did not make
any new resolutions this year, but I
do plan on reviewing the ones I
made in past years and evaluate
how I have done.
Sunday we were reminded of
the three things we need to do in
order to improve our Christian
Life: We need to Pray, Read the
Bible and Worship. I am OK in the
praying group and I attend worship
on a regular basis. But, I find it
hard to set aside time to read my
Bible. As Christians, this is our
book, our guide to daily life and
comfort in time of need.
Rev. Benson asked that we read
the entire Bible this year. That
sounds hard, but if we try we will
find that just 20 minutes a day is all
it takes. I will let you know how I
am doing and hope that you also
will give it a big try.
We begin each Sunday with
early service at 8:30, Sunday
School at 9:30 and regular worship
at 11. Each Wednesday we share
dinner at 6 and Bible Study at 7. It
is a great midweek pick-me-up.
Our adult choir meets each
Tuesday at 7 p.m. We have a won
derful hard working group and they
invite anyone interested to come
join in singing praises to the Lord.
We are getting close to our goal
for the new Pavilion. Please contin
ue to place donations in the box on
the back table.
God cares for each of you and
we do also. Contact Rev. Parker
Benson at 770-735-2770 if you
would like to become a part of our
family or if we can serve you in
anyway.

Racing Views
By Jumper Cable Man
Would you like to know about a
new dirt racetrack? How long has it
been since you last heard of anyone
building a new dirt racetrack?
I keep hearing about and seeing
dirt racetracks been changed into
paved racetrack but hardly any the
other way around.
This time the racetrack is being
built and it will be one of the best
new dirt tracks any of us have seen
in years.
Mr. Ken Murphy is the owner of
the track. He is in the trucking
business and in the road building
business.
He also told me that he had just
bought a sign company, so now he
is in the sign business.
But he has never been in the rac
ing business. And as anyone who
has ever managed a racetrack will
tell you, he is getting into a busi
ness that is the most different and
the most difficult of any he has
ever seen.
Now, that is not to say that the
racing business is a hard business
to be in or that the racing business
is not a rewarding business, it can
or cannot be.
But from what I have seen of
the racing business those who do
well with racing are those who do
well in any business and treat the
racing as a business.
Also the better racetrack opera
tors seem to do this job on a full
time basis. Those who want to run
the track part-time have a hard time
getting everything that is needed
done at a racetrack.
Some track operators seem to
think that the only time they are
needed at a racetrack is on race
way.
Most tracks need someone to
handle the press releases, the
advertising, the ordering of sup
plies and concessions items, cutting
the grass, and track preparation, all
of which need to be handled other
than on raceway.
Most tracks need about three
people full-time and about 20 or 30
part-time people just to handle all
that goes on at a racetrack.
Mr. Murphy is going to have
about three times as much work to
do at his track as most do at the
“normal” racetrack.
He will have a BIG dirt track for
special events measuring .54 miles
in length and it will be a high-
banked wide racetrack.
Inside that he will have a week
ly racing dirt track that will utilize
the third and fourth turns of the big
track for a 3/8-mile track.
This track will race each Satur
day night. Then he has a full 1/4-
mile track built in the first and sec
ond turns.
This track will be used for Mini
Stocks and Mini Modifieds along
with Dwarf Cars.
Then inside the 1/4-mile track
he will have a go-kart track. These
two tracks will race on Friday
nights.
And behind all of this he will
have a 4,000-foot drag strip, which
will race on Sunday afternoons.
Mr. Murphy is hoping to have
his track racing by the end of
spring.
He did not have any seating
built when I was there last week
but he did have three tractor-trailer
loads of steel ready to start work
building those seats.
His restrooms were about 3/ 4 of
the way finished and the slab had
been poured for the office/conces
sion stand.
The tunnel through from the
front of the grandstands to the front
of the grandstands has been built
and the entire place was beginning
to look like a racetrack. The track
itself was about 95 percent fin
ished.
Other promoters have been by
to look and the track and one noted
that none of his drivers were brave
enough to race on the big .54-mile
racetrack because it was going to
be so fast.
The 3/ 8-mile track looked like
that it would not be a problem for
most local drivers. All of this said
and I feel that his biggest money
maker will be the drag strip. It is
long and level.
I would think that the drag rac
ers will love it.
Mr. Murphy has about 500 acres
and will have plenty of parking
including tiered parking on the
backstretch.
There will be many places to see
a great race from at this racetrack.
Although I saw a couple of ponds
at the track I did not see a stream
anywhere so I’m not sure where his
water for the track will come from
but the ponds didn’t look like they
would be up to all the watering this
track is going to need.
Mr. Murphy did say that he had
access to a water line from Watts
Bar Lake but that is expensive
water and too costly to be watering
a racetrack with.
There are still lots of little prob
lems that Mr. Murphy will have to
work out before he opens and sev
eral more that he will have to solve
after he opens but from the start he
is going to have one of the most
interesting speedways we have
seen in years.
And it’s not that far away from
those of us in North Georgia. The
track is located 3 and _ miles West
of 1-75 at the 60-mile marker, the
Sweetwater/Spring City exit off I-
75.
Mr. Murphy does not have any
rules for the classes at the track yet
but he does say that if a car is legal
at one of the tracks in the area, they
will be legal at his track.
He says he will be racing about
the same classes as the tracks near
him are racing.
I wish Mr. Murphy all the luck
in the world and hope that his race
days are sunny ones! I can see this
track as one of those top dirt tracks
in the nation before too many more
years.
Maybe an Eldora of the South?
It could happen!
Get ready as the racing season is
just around a couple of cold spells
away! It may still be cool but you
can bundle up and take in a race or
two in the early spring this year. It
is a good way to start the season.
