A railroad is a type of transportation that uses a road mads of parallel rails to
make a track for cars to travel on.
A locomotive is a vehicle that runs on rails and is self-propelled by any of several
forms of energy. During its history, the railroad locomotive has been powered by
steam, electricity, and finally diesel power.
As early as sixth century, miners in Europe used horse-drawn wagons with
wooden wheels and rails. Around 1800, steam engines were invented. The world's
first public railroad to use steam power opened for public service in 1885 in
England.
The first public railroad in the United States was the Baltimore and Ohio.
Service began in 1830 with horses providing the power. Finally, in December 1830
an American-built steam-powered locomotive, the Best Friend of Charleston, began
service. The new operation combined the four important elements of track, trains,
mechanical power, and public service.
In the 1830s, the railroad began to gain popularity. In 1840, more than 8,800
miles of railroad were in operation in the United States. By I860, the total mileage
was more than 30,000 miles.
Next, electric locomotives challenged steam motive power. By the mid-1950s,
U. S. railroads were operating about 8,400 miles of electrified route.
Then, the increasing popularity of the diesel locomotive led to a reduction in
electrified mileage sections of railroads. Between 1955 and 1976, the electrified
mileage was cut in half.
The diesel locomotive greatly increased operating efficiency. During and after
World War II, the move to diesel power was rapid.
Today, most railroads industrial nations use either electric or diesel locomotives.
Railroads have made many improvements. The earliest railroad passenger cars
were simply stagecoaches equipped with flanged wheels. Today, railroads operate a
wide variety of cars designed for specific types of service.
Modern trains can be very grand with special dining and sleeping cars and even
entertainment. High speed trains travel up to 850 miles per hour with a very
smooth ride.
Use the letters below, each one time, to
spellout some types of power that have
hauled rail cars. Some letters are
filled in to get you started, and they
are scratched out on the letter list.
