Dragonettes defeat North Hall;
Long week for Dragons
In what might have been called an upset a couple
weeks ago, the Pickens Dragonettes played what might
have been their best game Friday night and beat North
Hall by a score of 60-51. Playing with confidence and
taking advantage of strong inside performances from
both Amanda Brown and Autumn Payne, as well as a
good showing on the perimeter from Jenni Weaver, the
’Nettes were able to turn back every challenge the
Lady Trojans gave them.
The girls led all night, at 15-9 after the first period,
23-20 at the break and 43-39 heading into the fourth
quarter. North got it even a couple times, but Pickens
always had an answer. Much of the time that answer
came from either Brown or Payne, as the two young
post players put on their best exhibition as a pair with
18 points each on the night, as well as many timely
rebounds. Weaver kicked in with 16 points from her
wing position and did a good job of getting the ball
inside regularly to the posts for them to score. The rest
of the scoring had Shanda Jones and Dixie Brown with
three each and Tifani Smith had two. It was a nice win
for the girls, and evened their sub-region record at 2-2
heading into this week’s games at Chestatee Tuesday
and Fannin home on Friday. Don't forget that for the
Fannin game their will be a barbecue dinner served in
the cafeteria by the middle school booster club.
The boys’ fortunes were not so good, as a talented
North Hall squad took them out behind the woodshed
and delivered an old fashioned whipping, 99-61. It
wasn’t quite as bad as the East Hall game, but it was
not a pretty sight as the Trojans jumped out 30-11 and
toyed with the Dragons the rest of the way. North was
able to neutralize Pickens’ high scorer Chris Duncan
and held him to a season low six points. Justin Denson
had 14 for Pickens and Daniel Culbreth played what
might have been the best game of his young career as
the freshman had 12. Brent Dunn also made several
nice moves in scoring nine, Stephen Hunter had seven,
Colby Shaw scored six, Jacob Gise had five and Steven
Nolan scored two.
It was not any prettier for the boys earlier in the
week, as they fell to White County on the road Tuesday
night 89-63. White County hit 13 three-pointers on the
night, and even though Pickens got Duncan, Hunter
and Denson all in double figures, they were no match
for the assault White put on them.
The Dragonettes got it close at the end in dropping a
55-49 decision to the Lady Warriors and will be anx
iously awaiting the rematch to try and capture the sec
ond seed in sub-region as the regular season winds
down. The boys have their work cut out for them, as
they have fallen to 1-3. They need a win at Chestatee to
get back on track, then face a critical rematch with Fan
nin Friday night. They do not want to finish worse than
third because, if they do, East Hall will await them at
region.
Remember to get out and support the barbecue Fri
day and cheer our teams on against the Rebels.
Middle School Basketball Report
By Rick Frye
The teams at Pickens County
Middle School have had three
games since our last report for the
8th grade teams and two for the 7th
grade teams. They’ve had a mixed
success rate of all wins for the 8th
grade girls, to a couple tough losses
by the 7th grade boys.
The final games before the
Christmas break saw all the teams
hosting Gilmer County. The 7th
grade Dragonettes won handily,
jumping out to a 17-7 lead after the
first quarter behind the hot shooting
of Maggi Patterson. She had 10 of
her game high 12 points during that
period. The girls stretched the lead
to 25-10 at the half and were never
threatened after that in winning 35-
19. Jenna Jarrett had six points, as
did Whitney Shirley coming off the
bench. Julianne Frye had five, Aley
Mosley scored four and Whitney
Stephens had two.
The 7th grade boys lost a heart
breaker, 35-33. After falling behind
9-2 in the first period, the Dragons
stormed back and had an excellent
18 point second quarter in taking a
20-17 lead at the break. They were
able to cling to that lead through the
third at 25-23, but it was Gilmer
that pulled it out in the last stanza to
get the victory. Devin Mosley paced
the attack with 16 points, Drew
Vaughan had six, Jacob Wilson
scored five, Dustin Poss had four
and Phillip Humphrey had two.
Later in the week, the 8th
graders got their turn and the girls
contest saw the ’Nettes cruise. Up
17-2 after the first period, liberal
substitutions were the story of the
day as the undermanned(womaned)
Lady Cats were no match for the
smooth running Dragonettes. Alli
son Tennant led the scoring with 12
points while Emily Anderson had
eight points and a solid game oper
ating from the point. Christy Nation
came off the bench for eight points
as well, Mallory Rich had six, Mea-
gan Stephens had five, Erin Carpen
ter scored four and Amber Willis
and Robbi Brown had two, as the
girls won 47-20.
The 8th grade boys suffered a
tough loss to Gilmer as well, drop
ping a 42-40 decision. The Pickens
boys were able to take an 11-6 lead
to start the game, but fell behind
and trailed at intermission 18-20.
Gilmer stretched that lead by two
more points to be up 31-27 entering
the fourth and held on for the two-
point victory in spite of a valiant
effort by the Dragons. Jamie
Cheshire was the lone Dragon in
double figures with 13 points,
although Bradley Barnard was close
with nine. Georgie Weaver had six
points, Colby Taylor scored five,
Brock Jones had four and Tucker
Burch had three.
The first games back after the
break were in Fannin County, and
Pickens managed to split, losing
both 7th grade games while win
ning both 8th. The 7th grade
’Nettes had a bad case of turnoveri-
tis that led to their downfall, as Fan
nin took advantage of some loose
ball handling and passing to convert
easy baskets in winning 38-29. The
’Nettes were up 19-18 at the break,
but a horrid third quarter saw Fan
nin race to a 34-24 lead and main
tain it until the end as Pickens was
unable to mount an offensive
attack. Frye was tough when she got
the ball and led the way with 14
points, while Patterson and Mosley
had four, Jarrett had three, Alexa
Huston had two and Stephens and
Mary Alice Jasperse had one.
The 7th grade Dragons were
next, and a low scoring game saw
them trailing by a 17-10 count at the
break. The Rebels were able to keep
a safe margin throughout the second
half as the Dragons struggled to get
any continuity to their game, and
the final ended up 37-30 Fannin.
Vaughan was the high scorer with
12 points, while Mosley had eight,
Wilson and Austin Carter scored
four and Humphrey had two.
The 8th grade girls rode a big
second quarter by Tennant to open it
up at the break against Fannin, 24-
13, and they were able to stretch the

2nd annual “Coaches vs Coaches”
Basketball Fundraiser set for Saturday
It’s that time of year again... the
PCRD youth basketball coaches
again challenge the Pickens County

Last year the PCRD Women’s

narrow margin.
This year is a new year and there
are some new faces on both sides.
Anything is possible in this game!
The game is also electrified by the
“10 Point X Spot.” This X is located
just shy of half court and is worth
10 points to the team that makes it
in from that spot.
3’s own Dave Garner will be
announcing the game and providing
great commentary on many of the
“mishaps” that are sure to take
place! There will be door prizes
given out and contests held for all in
attendance.
The money raised will go
towards program costs for the Parks
and Recreation Department. The
game will take place on Saturday,
Jan. 25 at the Pickens County Mid
dle School Gym.
The women’s game will be at 6
p.m. and the men’s game will be at

PCRD office.
This meeting is designed to
research the softball community’s
opinion about fast-pitch softball and
the overall feeling of how it could
and or should be offered in the
recreation level.
There will be no decisions made
on the 11th, but information and
input will be gathered to help the
PCRD staff make the best decisions
for the program. All are encouraged
to attend.
PCRD is also looking for fast-
pitch softball umpires and coaches.
If interested, call 253-8862.
