Lois Stewart publishes memoir of
growing up in rural Pickens County
Tales of a Country Girl — Growing Up on a Two Mule Farm
Cherokee County Frogtown
native and later Four Mile Commu
nity resident, Lois Wehunt Stewart
has published a memoir, "Tales of a
Country Girl — Growing Up on a
Two Mule Farm."
The publisher is Brentwood
Christian Press, Columbus, Geor
gia. More than an autobiography,
this is a book rich in local history
and customs from 1927 to the mid
1940s.
Over 80 events are recalled.
Many are little known aspects of
rural life in Cherokee and Pickens
County. The book is both interest
ing and entertaining.
Among the fascinating segments
are family accounts of food cultiva
tion, feeding of the "chain gang"
who were working the roads, coun
try language and expressions, edu
cational, singing and religious
events, and the simple experiences
which provided children's pastimes
during the depression years.
Six pages of original poems and
fourteen pages of photos complete
the book.
Mrs. Stewart was one of eleven
children of Luther and Everet
Wehunt. The family moved to Pick
ens County in 1935.
Her surviving siblings are Mrs.
Clora Reavis and Sam Wehunt of
Jasper, Mrs. Oveda Reavis of Nel
son, Sherman Wehunt of Ball
Ground and Kenneth Wehunt of
Barnesville, GA.
Mrs. Stewart graduated from
Tate High School in 1945 and later
graduated from Berry College with
a major in education and minor in
music.

Insurance Q’s & A’s
From Georgia Insurance and Fire Commissioner John Oxendine
During the winter months we
hear about many incidents of frozen
pipes and subsequent water damage
to homes and furnishings. Many
consumers are aware that flood cov
erage is not included in standard
homeowners policies and they worry
that damage from frozen pipes will
fall under the flood classification.
However, flood waters are consid
ered to come from outside the
home, so most homeowners policies
will cover the cost to repair frozen
pipes and the resulting damage to
carpets, furniture, etc.

PIN OR POST?
Fractures often leave teeth
weak and in need of underpin
ning for support. Pins and
posts can be placed in the
tooth to give added support
and create a core around which
to build the restoration (fill
ing). However, pins and posts
are used in different circum
stances and for different pur
poses.
Pins are usually used to add
retention for filling material
mainly in the back molars.
They are cemented, tapped, or
screwed into place to add sup
port where there is no nerve
removal (root canal therapy).
However, pins are not usually

used with composite resins.
Post, on the other hand, are
used in instances where the
tooth’s nerve has been
removed by root canal therapy.
They are not always necessary.
Using them depends on how
much chewing force will be
exerted on the bite and how
much tooth structure is left.

Q: I live in an apartment and
water from an upstairs neighbor’s
pipes damaged some of my furni
ture . Will my own insurance pay for
cleaning and repairs or should I try
to get my neighbor's insurance to
pay?
A: In this situation, your proper
ty should be covered under your
own renters (or condo owner) poli
cy. If you don’t have such coverage,
the neighbor’s liability policy may
pay for the damage, but only if you
can prove your neighbor was negli
gent in allowing the pipes to freeze.
Q: I had several water lines dam
aged during a recent freeze. Will my
homeowners insurance pay to have
the pipes repaired?
A: Damage to internal plumbing
caused by freezing is not covered in
most homeowners policies. The pol
icy will cover furniture or other
household items damaged by water
leakage, but not the pipes them
selves.
