A bevy of youths recently cel
ebrated art at a workshop de
signed by Ms. Kathe Hall.
“I want to be an art teacher
when I grown up,” was among
the many statements Kathe Hall,
talented instructor, heard from
her delighted students the week
of July 29. The children, kinder
garten through the fifth grade,
tried their hand at creating the
“Sunflower” work of the famed
Vincent Van Gogh using a vari
ety of mediums including pop
corn and black beans.
The young people were also
entertained with a variety of art
projects like flyswatter and secret
rock painting, nature art, draw
ing, weaving and decorative sun
visors.
Ms. Hall taught the group mo
tivating facts about the artist for
which VanGoghs Hideaway is
named. She told the children,
“He painted 900 canvases during
his lifetime and his favorite sub
ject was the sunflower.
“My goal is to introduce vari
ous arts and crafts to inspire chil

“And if they develop lasting
friendships along the way, so
much the better.”
Debbie Brownlee, art assis

experience. “I am an artist,” said
one smiling face.

About Bob, Rescued Furniture Store’s Kitty Greeter
Part IV
By Lynn Turner, PAR
It wasn’t my day to work at
the thrift store, but I had some
donations to drop by so I was
there way before opening time.
The store’s furry buddy and kitty
greeter Bob was napping in the
parking lot - a sight that is worri
some - but she hopped up and
greeted me warmly when I got
out of my car. She led the way to
the front door (she is SUCH a
wonderful hostess) and waited
patiently while I fumbled with
the key. Inside the store, she
again waited patiently while I put
my things down on the checkout
counter and turned on some
lights. She knows the routine so
well. Then she snapped into
working cat mode by pointing
out that there were no goodies in
the treat bowl that we keep for
our four-footed visitors. She is
very conscientious about hospi
tality. After refilling the treat
bowl, I headed back out the door
to get more things from my car
when who should appear but
Calli, Bob’s sister cat.
Knowing from previous expe
rience that Bob would not wel

open paws, I stepped outside and
gave Calli a friendly scratch on
the head. It is very unusual for
her to come around, so I put a
couple of treats outside for her
just to let her know that not
everyone at the store was against
her visiting and then I headed to
my car. From the corner of my
eye I saw some jerky movements
from something beige and about
two feet tall heading toward the
porch of the store where I had
last seen Calli. It suddenly
dawned on me that what I was
Bob the cat
seeing was poultry in motion.
The terrorist chicken had re
turned.
Now, the chicken hadn’t been
around in a long, long while. All
the volunteers thought that we
had seen the last of this foul tem
pered fowl, but, alas, that was not
to be. That heinous hen was back
again. Before I could completely
form the thought, “Uh oh,” Calli
shot around the side of the build
ing but, luckily, with no chicken
in pursuit. I took my time getting
the rest of my things from the car
so that the chicken would have
time to polish off Calli’s treats
and go on her way. My strategy
worked because there was no
chicken in sight when I returned
to the porch.
Later in the day I stopped by
the store again and stayed to help
Whole lot of shredding going on
Keep Pickens Beautiful
brought the Shredder to Jasper
recently where individuals could
have a box/bag securely shred
ded and recycled by 1 st Secure
Shredding. Stan Barnett, board
member, thanks Jim Massey for
participating in the KPB spon
sored program while Michael
from 1st Secure Shredding is
ready to shred Jim’s paper. De
spite the rain, there was a good
turnout and about 3,000 pounds
of confidential paperwork was
shredded.
KPB would like to thank
everyone who came out into the
rain for their support. For more
information about the shredder
schedule, you can visit the KPB
web-site at www.keeppickens-

because the regular volunteer
was so busy. When I opened the
door to leave, I had a flashback
to the scene from the movie The
Shining where Jack Nicholson’s
crazed character chops his way
through a door with an axe, grins
a demonic grin at the people
cowering behind it and says,
“Here’s Johnny!” As I opened
the door, there was the attack
chicken looking much taller than
her actual 24 inches with a scary
gleam in her evil little eyes and
on the verge of charging in. I
slammed the door shut and
locked it. You just can’t assume
that chickens can’t open doors.
Either something distracted
the chicken and she left or an un
intimidated customer chased her
away because a short while later,
a customer came in... alone...
and I darted to the safety of my
car and squealed out of the park
ing lot.
Bob would like for you to
come by Rescued Furniture Store
and visit her. She loves to meet
new people and see old friends.
She would be especially appre
ciative if you would shoo away
any lone chicken that you might
see linking outside the store.
