Pickens boogies down for National Dance Day
Submitted by Crystal Merrell
of Pickens Arts and Cultural
Alliance
Pickens County joined thou
sands across America to cele
brate National Dance Day on
July 28, 2012. The event spon
sored by Pickens Arts and Cul
tural Alliance (PACA) was held
at Peace Park in Jasper on a
beautiful, breezy morning. More
than 50 came out to express
themselves in movement. Be
ginning at 10:00am, the event of
fered something for everyone
with a wide variety of displays
and opportunities to join in.
PACA Board Member Crystal
Merrell welcomed everyone and
explained briefly about National
Dance Day. In 2010, Congress-
woman Eleanor Holmes Norton
proposed a resolution for the last
Saturday in July to be National
Dance Day. The television show
So You Think You Can Dance
and it's producer Nigel Lythgoe
have continued the celebrations
and provide 'official' Dance Day
routines on Youtube for people to
learn and perform on National
Dance Day. This year, there
were two routines - a Zumba
Fitness 'everybody' routine and
an 'advanced' hip-hop routine.
Beth Petrillo, of Get to the Pointe
dance studio, was the MC of the
event.
Leading off the dancing were
the Bent Tree Twirlers Square
Dance group. Organized by
David Johnson, the group had
four couples and a caller demon
strating their skill and passion for
the square dance. Square Dance
is the Official State Dance of
Georgia according to Wikipedia
sources. Square dance is always
called in English, even abroad.
David stated that the Bent Tree
Twirlers are open to anyone in
terested in learning or continuing
square dance. He stated that it is
a piece of American history that
is fading somewhat. Whereas
once there were 25 or more
square dance clubs in Atlanta,
there are now about 4. Pickens
County is certainly fortunate to
have a club in our midst, espe
cially one with a 30 year history.

about the Bent Tree Twirlers,

rector Amelia McIntyre gets down in front of the Pickens

Next to be 'kickin' it' with
some awesome moves was the
Performance Team from North
Georgia ATA Martial Arts.
The group dressed in black was
lead by Stacy Kisner. This year
on So You Think You Can Dance
for the first time there is a martial
artist (named Cole Horibe) in the
top 20 contestants. From high
kicks and fast punches, to
nunchuks and sticks, to board
breaking and combat, North
Georgia ATA is definitely excit
ing to watch. Contact North
Georgia ATA at 706-692-7600
for more information about this
group.
Sylvie Augustin (also of
Whitest one Farms) taught Afro-
Caribbean dance to the willing
crowd. Using original music ti
tled "Star Light" created by her
brother whose performance
name is JBones of the Cav Crew,
the dance was a short preview
and introduction to a longer rou
tine that will be available in the
coming months by Slyvie. For

for help with recent raffle
Wednesday, July 25, members of local Marine Corps League Detachment 1280 met with
Kroger Manager Chris Reeve to present a plaque and express appreciation for help the store
provided during the detachment’s recent summertime fundraiser.
Kroger provided a sizable gift card for the Marine League raffle first prize and allowed
League members to sell a heap of raffle tickets from the store parking lot. Kroger’s continued
support is a meaningful contribution to the raffle each year. Raffle proceeds fund care pack
ages bound for service members at the war front and other League benevolence to the local
community.

For the official National
Dance Day Zumba routine, Jen
nifer Kresho of Jasper Fitness
taught the basic steps to the
crowd. With easy to learn steps
and lots of room for improvisa
tion, Zumba is a fun and feisty
dance and exercise that has
swept the nation. Zumba incor
porates hip-hop, samba, salsa,
merengue, mambo, martial arts,
and some Bollywood and belly
dance moves, all set to music de
signed to get you moving.
This year's advance dance
was a hip-hop routine. Get to
the Pointe instructors and stu
dents spent extra studio hours re
hearsing this routine for National
Dance Day. Fast paced and high
energy describe this dance. A
few members of the crowd de
cided to give this advanced rou
tine a try, including several
members of the North Georgia
ATA (they aren't afraid of any
thing!). Get to the Pointe in
structors Carla Jarrett and Lauren
Bail were also part of the plan
ning team for this year's Pickens
County celebration.
The final dance was for liter
ally everyone, dogs and babies
included, as the crowd formed a
large 'strut line'. People danced
their way down through the two
lines with a partner in their own
unique style.
Thank you to the City of
Jasper, community workers, and
Mayor Weaver for help with site
set-up and the use of Peace Park.
Thank you to the Marble Valley

us to use the Old Jail and Kirby

Dance Day in Pickens on July

Show your support for our fallen HEROES as we ride in honor of
David and all of those who have laid down their lives
defending our freedom.
This ride is starting at the Intersection of Hwy 515 and Philadelphia
Road. This intersection was dedicated in David’s memory. I planned
this ride specifically in August to commemorates David’s life. We all
remember his death, his sacrifice. I want to celebrate his birth, his
LIFE. The ride will take us through the beautiful back roads of North
Georgia in the Pickens /Gordon counties area.
There will be live music, food, and door prizes after the ride.
Proceeds from this ride will be given to Homes for Our Troops.
This will ba a law enforcement led motorcycle ride.
Cars and trucks are welcome too.
