organization honored Mark Messier, the
club’s center from 1979 until 1991, by retir
ing his number 11. The ceremony took place
before the Oilers’ matchup with the Phoenix
Coyotes, who were coached by Messier’s
former Edmonton teammate, Wayne Gret
zky. Messier racked up 1,034 points (392
goals and 642 assists) in 851 games during
his 12 seasons in Edmonton. He also won
five Stanley Cups with the Oilers as well as
the 1984 Conn Smythe award. Messier re
tired from the NHL in 2004 and was in
ducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame three
years later.
February 28th:
On this day in 1988, New Jersey Devils
right winger, Pat Verbeek, became the first
player in franchise history to score four
goals in a game. Verbeek netted Jersey’s first
goal at the 14:22 mark of the opening period
before scoring twice in the second. He
capped his impressive performance by light
ing the lamp at the 4:01 mark of the third.
Verbeek’s outing helped the Devils over
come a 3-0 deficit and win an 8-6 shootout
over the Minnesota North Stars.
March 1st:
On this day in 1969, New York Yankees
center fielder, Mickey Mantle, announced
his retirement following an 18-year major
league career. Mantle wore the Yankee pin
stripes from 1951 until 1968 and recorded a
0.298 average with 2,415 hits, 536 home
runs and 1,509 RBIs. He also made 20 All-
Star appearances while winning seven
World Series rings, three American League
MVP awards, the 1956 league batting crown
and a Gold Glove in 1962. Mantle led the
American League in home runs four times
and once for RBIs in 1956. The organization
retired his number seven in 1969 and he be
came a member of the Baseball Hall of
Fame in 1974.
March 2nd:
On this day in 1929, Montreal Canadiens
goaltender, George Hainsworth, became the
first netminder in NHL history to register 20
shutouts in a single season. Hainsworth
reached the milestone during Montreal’s 3-
0 blanking of the Boston Bruins. He com
pleted the campaign with 22 before
completing his career with 94. Hainsworth
was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame
in 1961 and was ranked 46th on the Hockey
News’ list of 100 Greatest Players in 1998.
March 3rd:
On this day in 1951, the Temple Owls
traveled to Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania for
a college basketball game against Wilkes
University. This contest saw Temple for
ward, Bill Mlkvy, outscore the opponent all
by himself. Mlkvy registered 54 unanswered
points before finishing with 73 as Temple
throttled the Colonels, 99-69. The “Owl
without a Vowel” completed the 1950-51
campaign as the NCAA scoring champion
with an average of 29.2 points. Mlkvy,
whose number 20 was retired by Temple
University, was also inducted into the
school’s hall of fame in 1971.
March 4th:
On this day in 1941, Chicago Black-
hawks goaltender, Sam LoPresti, established
an NHL single-game record with 80 saves.
LoPresti faced an overall total of 83 shots
during Chicago’s 3-2 loss to the Boston Bra
ins. He played two seasons with the Black-
hawks and compiled an overall record of
30-38-6 with four shutouts and a 3.12 goals
against average.
March 5th:
On this day in 2004, the Philadelphia
Flyers and Ottawa Senators set an NHL
record for penalty minutes in a single game
with 419. Most of those infractions came

game that the Flyers have always taken
pride in. They also take pride in winning,
which they did by defeating Ottawa, 5-3.

PICKENS ANIMAL RESCUE
Sweet and handsome 8-
year-old Tip is a really
good boy. He is good
with dogs and people,
but sadly not cats. He
loves walks and neck
scratches. Rides good in
the car. Might need some
extra house training.
Would love to cuddle on the couch and take
leisurely strolls. Slightly pulls on the leash
to be sure he can get all the good sniffs in
during his walk.
Make an appointment to meet Tip or check
out our listings of dogs and cats on
Petfinder.
