Minister’s Comer
years.
One could compare the
Jewish Shema ... “Listen, Is
rael, the Lord is our God, the
Lord alone, and you shall
love the Lord your God with
all your heart, all your being,
and all your might”.... to
Christianity’s Lord’s Prayer
...”Our Father who art in
heaven” ... .because the
prayer is recited morning
and evening and is a basic
personal belief.
Mark has Jesus in the
Temple teaching following
his entrance into Jerusalem
on Palm Sunday a few days
earlier. He has been pretty
busy throwing out the mon
eychangers and facing reli
gious questions from Jewish
religious leaders.
He asked them in Mark
11:30 “was the Baptism of
John from heaven or men?”
They reasoned, “if we say
from heaven; he will say,
Why then did you not believe
him? But if we shall say, of
men; they feared the people
would rise up against them.
And they evaded the question
answering “...we cannot
tell.” Jesus, responded “nei
ther will I tell you by what
authority I do these things?”
Would you have answered
honestly or stepped aside
with a false answer? Fast for
ward to Chapter 12 and these
religious leaders are again
asking Jesus another question
as to the greatest command
ment ... Just To Ask?
Surprise. By answering
their question with the
Shema he quieted them “and
no man after that dare ask
him any question.
Have you ever asked, how
do I figure my financial tithe
... before or after taxes?
Why should I go to church to
worship God with a bunch of
hypocrites? Why are we
sending food to Africa to feed
hungry children when we
have hungry kids here? If
they are a preacher I am Elvis
Presley?
Question: Is it possible we
could be asking religious
questions like the Jewish
leaders to attempt to justify
our own misconceptions and
agendas?
Answer... love God with
all your heart, with all your
soul, with all your mind, with
all your strength and All your
neighbors.

Racing
free the whole stage with
Logano dominating most of
the stage and winning it.
Stage 3 started on lap 240
with Larson in the lead after
beating Logano off pit road
during the stage break pit
stops. The 4th caution of the
race and 2nd caution for inci
dent would come out right
after the restart when Chas
tain and Kyle Busch got to
gether from Chastain coming
up into Busch and Busch
coming down on Chastain.
The race resumed on lap 246
and Logano would take the
lead back from Larson. The
5th and last caution of the
race flew on lap 251 for Bell
spinning out in turn 4 due to
clipping the apron in turn 4 a
little bit. The race resumed on
lap 257 and stayed green the
rest of the way. Logano con
tinued to dominate the race
until Harvick passed him for
the lead with 67 to go after
battling with him for the lead
for many laps. Towards the
end, Bell, on 11 lap fresher
tires than Harvick, started to
make up a lot of ground on
Harvick and got down to just
under half a second behind
him. Unfortunately, it just
wasn’t enough as Harvick
would hold on to win at
Richmond and win his sec
ond straight race after being
on a 65-race winless streak.
As for how the overall
race was, it had good racing
and was better than the spring
race was. Stage 1 was really
good with many battles for
position, some really good
driver battles and good
amount of passing, which
was due to drivers being able
to run the bottom, middle,
and top lanes in the turns.
Stage 2 started off the same
but due to the pit stops and
the stage staying green the
whole way, the field got re
ally spread out which led to
not many battles and passing
for position happening. Stage
3 was kind of the same as
Stage 2 but was better since
it had more passing due to
several drivers being on dif
fering strategies by pitting
later. The ending was also
pretty good because it had a
long battle for the lead be
tween Logano and Harvick,
and several intense final laps
with Bell closing in fast on
Harvick. So it wasn’t a super
exciting race but it definitely
could’ve been worse. It was
simply a fairly enjoyable
race.
Next week, NASCAR
heads up to New York to race
at the Watkins Glen Interna
tional. Road courses haven’t
been great this year aside
from COTA but Watkins
Glen has provided great rac
ing in the past so we’ll see
how next week at The Glen
turns out.

August 14-August 20
August 14th:
On this day in 1937, the Detroit Tigers set
the major league record for runs scored in a
doubleheader with 36. This took place dur
ing a two-bill with the St. Louis Browns,
where the Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 lead
in the opener before winning, 16-1. Game
two saw Detroit score 16 unanswered runs
on its way to routing St. Louis yet again, this
time by a 20-7 final.
August 15th:
On this day in 1997, the Los Angeles
Dodgers organization retired the number
two that was worn by manager, Tommy La-
sorda, from 1976 until 1996. Lasorda com
piled an overall record of 1,599-1,439
during his tenure with the club. He also led
the Dodgers to eight division champi
onships, four national league pennants and
two World Series titles. Lasorda was twice
voted the National League’s Manager of the
Year and he was inducted into the Baseball
Hall of Fame in ’97 as well.
August 16th:
On this day in 1965, the American Foot
ball League awarded its ninth franchise to
Joe Robbie, an attorney, politician and head
of a tobacco company. Robbie partnered
with comedian, Danny Thomas, and to
gether, the duo founded the Miami Dol
phins. The team’s expansion season took
place in 1966 and since then, the Dolphins
have captured five AFC crowns and two
Super Bowl titles. Miami’s lengthy run of
success also included the NFL’s only perfect
season in 1972.
August 17th:
On this day in 1969, both of New York’s
NFL franchises met for the very first time in
a preseason game at the Yale Bowl. To the
average fan, this contest didn’t mean a
whole lot, but to the fans of the Big Apple,
it meant everything. Seven months prior to
this New York Bowl, the Jets pulled off a
stunning upset of the heavily favored Balti
more Colts in Super Bowl III. It was a vic
tory nobody saw coming, but it was still
considered a fluke when the defending
champs took the field with the Giants. All
the Jets did was jump out to a convincing
17-0 lead before routing New York’s glam
our boys, 37-14. Reigning Super Bowl
MVP, Joe Namath, completed 14 of 16
passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns.
His last was a one-yarder to tight end, Pete
Lammons, which came with 7:10 remaining.
This afternoon saw the Jets rise as the em
pires of the Empire City.
August 18th:
On this day in 1915, the Boston Braves
hosted the St. Louis Cardinals in the very
first major league game ever held at Braves
Field. Boston shortstop, Rabbit Maranville,
went two for four and drove in the park’s
first run on a second inning single. The
player that scored that run was left fielder,
Sherry Magee, who led off that frame with
a base hit. Braves’ starter, Dick Rudolph,
was credited with the facilities’ very first
win, striking out six batters in a complete ef
fort. Boston went on to record a 3-1 victory
over the Cards.
August 19th:
On this day in 1990, Chicago White Sox
closer, Bobby Thigpen, became the fastest
pitcher to collect 40 saves in a season. Thig
pen tossed a hitless ninth as the White Sox
defeated the Texas Rangers, 4-2, at Arling
ton Stadium. The ’90 campaign turned out
to be a record-setting one for Thigpen as he
racked up 57 saves, the most in major league
history at that time. Anaheim’s Francisco
Rodriguez eclipsed that number by posting
62 of his own in 2008. K-Rod’s total re
mains the all-time mark.
August 20th:
On this day in 1980, Pittsburgh Pirates
leadoff man and center fielder, Omar
Moreno, set the major league record by
stealing 70 bases for the third consecutive
year. Moreno also had a single on the game’s
first at-bat, but followed that up with a
groundout, flyball to third and strikeout. The
Pirates blew an early lead and dropped a 5-
1 decision to the Houston Astros. Moreno
completed the ’80 campaign with 96 steals,
which remains a Pittsburgh franchise record.
It’s also the most ever by any single-season
non-league leader in major league history.

Gartrell
now which includes first a
player’s batting average, on-
base and slugging. Currently,
the Braves latest rookie sen
sation Vaughn Grissom’s line
is off the charts at
.429/.500/.810 for example.
As for pitching metrics, the
most telling and useful meas
urement beyond the old
earned run average is walks
plus hits per innings pitched
(WHIP). Currently, Astro
Justin Verlander leads MLB
in that category at 0.86 which
basically means that he al
lows less than one base run
ner per inning.
Beyond these terms, the
sabermetric lovers have
dozens of superfluous stats
which are pretty much
twenty gallons of crap in a
five gallon bucket.
Other new stats are in fact
more a kin to trivia than sub
stantial data. I refer to them
as “Ego Numbers” because
they tend to be somewhat in
teresting to fans and appeal to
player bravado.
Exit velocity means the
speed with which a baseball
bounces off a bat in miles per
hour. It’s fantastic to hit the
ball 110 mph but if it’s right
to a defensive player, it’s still
an out.
Right?
Home run distance infor
mation is cool, but as long as
it clears the fence, a 320
footer counts the same as a
520 footer.
Right?
“Barrels” means the num
ber of baseballs put in play
which came off the “sweet
spot” on the baseball bat (the
thickest part of a bat where it
is meant to strike the ball).
Again, a player may figura
tively “knock the cover off
the baseball”, but that act
doesn’t automatically trans
late into a base hit.
How many flukes and in
field hits did the Mets get
when they took four of five
games from the Braves less
than two weeks ago?
Fans simply do not re
quire all of these latest and
greatest stats in depth and all-
encompassing metrics to
enjoy a baseball game, but
perhaps, this little glossary
can help people understand
them.
