HONOR.

To be esteemed of men is a commen
dable desire; and next to riches is the
ruling passion vf life. Tt is in fact to
this end that most men desire riches.
That position in life, however , which
in the mere contingancy of wealth,
will not repay tho effort necessary to
acquire it. To he truly esteemed of*
men is to be tho possessor of qualities
which money can not buy. To be wor¬
thy of that esteem in the highest so¬
cial position attainable in this life. How
shall it be reached? Every body has
heard that, t‘honesty is tbe best poli¬
cy”, and the truth of the maxim is
substantiated in every phase of human
history; but it* no higher morel ground
than this were possible, we should dis
pair of ever witnessing a correct stan¬
dard of honor.
Honesty which springs from motive
of policy, deserves not the name. I;
