The significance of numbers in the Bible
BY CHARLES WHATLEY
cbwhatley@hotmail.com
I’ve never really liked
math; science was, and
is, “my thing.” But I do
like numbers and how
they can be woven
together to tell a story.
There is one God who
came to earth as the Son
of God and the Son of
Man (represented by the
two candles on the altar
table). And there are
three persons in one God
and the Son’s story is
told in four gospels, etc.
Did you know there
are five books in the
Bible with only one
chapter? Or that Moses
wrote five books? And
there are five Old Testa
ment offerings? Six, men
tioned 199 times in the
Bible, is the number for
man; we were created
on the sixth day, “a little
lower than the angels”
who are represented
by seven which is the
number of perfection. So
six becomes the number
for imperfection and the
number of the beast or
anti-Christ is 666!
In fact, my son and I
would play games with
numbers and I think
it helped him with his
math. For instance, don’t
add 98 plus 98; it’s easier
to add 100 plus 100 and
subtract 4 to get 196. He
did miss a math ques
tion on his kindergarten
entrance test; asked how
many months have 28
days, he answered “all of
them!” It was a joke we’d
just talked about, and the
question was not, “How
many months have only
28 days?”
Then we started go
ing to the Navajo Res
ervation where four is
an important number.
Their land is marked by
four sacred mountains
(LaPlatte, Taylor, Na
vajo and San Francisco).
There are four seasons,
four sacred colors (black,
white, blue, and yellow)
representing four cardi
nal directions, four seas
and four clouds and four
worlds in their creation
story ... the black world
Nihodilhil, the blue world
Nihodootlizh, the yellow
world Nihaltsoh, and the
white world Nihalgai.
Maybe you remember
the numbers woven into
Mark 9:1-9?
“Six days later Jesus
took with him Peter,
James and John, and led
them up a high moun
tain, where they were
alone. As they looked
on, a change came over
Jesus, and his clothes
became shining white
- whiter than anyone in
the world could wash
them. Then the three
disciples saw Elijah and
Moses talking with Jesus.
Peter spoke up and said
to Jesus, “Teacher, how
good it is that we are
here! We will make three
tents, one for you, one
for Moses, and one for
Elijah.””
The first thing I no
ticed was the suggestion
about three tents for six
people? Apparently the
three is important? The
message of the Bible is
told at three levels; first,
Moses represents the
law.
Second, Elijah repre
sents the prophets, and
third, Jesus represents
grace. It turns out, the
three is critical in this
story.
I say all of this to
remember that I’ve often
wished someone had
taught me the beauty
and mystery of numbers
in addition to the pluses
and minuses. Maybe I’d
have liked it more?
Charles ‘Buddy’ Whatley is a retired
United Methodist pastor serving
Woodland and Bold Springs UMC and,
with Mary Ella, a missionary to the
Navajo Reservation in Arizona.
