No special
election has yet
been set to fill the
seat of Milner city
council member
Vickie Smith who
resigned last
month. At the
time, Smith said
she stepped down
because her “life circum
stances have changed”.
Elections supervisor
Anita Reid reported last
week she had not
been contacted by
Milner officials re
garding the empty
council post.
Milner city ad
ministrator Tausha
Grose said a vote
will be scheduled
after the council
accepts Smith’s resigna
tion. That item was on
the agenda for the coun
cil meeting last night.

Grand Reserve Champion
Robby Royal of Rescue Smokers won the Grand Reserve
Championship over the weekend at BBQ & Blues here. Royal
has long participated in the local cook-off and is a regular on
the popular television series BBQ Pitmasters. He also teaches
classes to educate others on how to properly prepare, cook
and present competition barbecue.
Georgia unemployment rate drops to 4.5%,

unemployment rate
dropped from 4.8% in
February to 4.5% for the
month of March. The
national unemployment
average is 6.0%.
“Georgia’s economy

ic,” said Governor
Kemp. “While we
still have a ways to
go, our unemploy
ment rate has now
dropped for eleven
straight months

and we’re getting
more and more

The total number
of jobs in Georgia in
March increased by
21,800,reaching a total
of 4,486,000, and the
total number of em
ployed Georgians was
up 564,000 compared to
April of 2020.
14 new cases last week
Lamar County had
1,326 confirmed cases of
COVID-19 as of the April
18 update from DPH.
That number is up from
1,312 cases March 28.
Lamar has had 119 coro-
navirus related hospital
izations.
Lamar’s COV1D death
toll remained at 44.
As of Monday, sheriff
Brad White was tracking
23 positive cases at 181o-
cal residences.

cross on May 16th at 3
p.m. at 219 Rock Springs
Rd., Milner. The cross,
which was installed in
2020, includes a prayer
garden, a heated baptis
mal pool, and engraved
bricks in honor and
memoriam of individuals
and families.
