Ansley Potter and John Hewitt are
SGES STAR student and teacher
St. George’s Episcopal
School senior Ansley
Potter was recently an
nounced as the school’s
STAR student and she
selected John Hewitt
of Barnesville as her
STAR teacher. The STAR
student award goes to
the high school Junior
or Senior who scores the
top SAT score in a single
test administration. The
student must also be in
the top 10% of his/ her
class based on grade
point average as well.
Ansley has attended
SGES since sixth grade
and is active in many
sports including basket
ball, soccer and cross
country. She has been
Beta Club president for
two years, served on the
Honor Council for three
years and is a member of
Junior GUILD. She plans
on attending the Univer
sity of Georgia in the fall.
She is the daughter of
Kim and Arthur Potter.
She said she selected her
STAR teacher based on
his ability to make learn
ing fun and relate lessons
to real world applica
tions.
“Mr. Hewitt has
brought so much happi
ness to my senior year.
Although 1 have been his
student for only one year,
he has had a significant
impact on my life. He has
a passion for teaching,
and he truly cares about
the success of each of
his students. Inside the
classroom, he spends
time making sure every
student understands the
material. He has an amaz
ing ability to apply class
room situations to the
real world. These real-life
applications make all the
difference in learning;
they are really interesting
and quite eye-opening.
Mr. Hewitt’s ability to
captivate his students
in this manner truly sets
him apart,” said Ansley.
“Outside the classroom,
he has helped me dis
cover entirely new career
paths 1 never knew about.
He has definitely broad
ened my horizons as 1
decide on a career, and
he has encouraged me to
do what will make me the
happiest. Mr. Hewitt has
the ability to brighten up
anyone’s day inside and
outside the classroom
with his extensive inven
tory of phrases and his
enthusiastic personality.
Mr. Hewitt’s greatest tal
ent is his ability to make
learning fun. He is a true
gem, and 1 am so thank
ful to have crossed paths
with him.”
John Hewitt has taught
part time at SGES as a
science and math in
structor for three years.
He teaches Algebra I,
Algebra 111, Statistics and
Physics.
“Mr. Hewitt is beloved
by all his students and
does a tremendous job
of connecting with them
and providing real life
application of content
covered. He brings en
ergy, enthusiasm, kind
ness, and compassion to
each of his classes,” said
SGES high school direc
tor Blake Monts de Oca.
“John truly cares about
his students and is genu
inely interested in their
future success.”
He taught Ansley in
statistics and said she is
an exceptionally intelli
gent but humble student
who is driven to succeed
but well grounded.
“You so richly deserve
every accolade that will
come your way as we
approach graduation. 1
am more than honored
to be a very small part of
your great success. Your
choosing me as STAR
teacher is perhaps one
of the most humbling
experiences 1 have ever
had. Considering the
great wealth of teachers
at SGES, it truly came as
a shock that you would
consider me for that
honor,” he said. “When
the Lord was handing
out intellect, Ansley and
the rest of her family
managed to get multiple
doses. She is extremely
driven to succeed,
never satisfied with ‘just
enough to get by.’ Her
teachers best be pre
pared for class, because
you can bet that she will
be. She is one of the best
students 1 have ever had
the pleasure of teaching. 1
probably learned more
from her than she could
have possibly learned
from me.”

Carson Dingier is the
STAR student at Rock
Springs Christian Acad
emy for the 2020-2021
school year. He has
attended Rock Springs
since the fifth grade.
Carson has the highest
score on the SAT test for
his senior class and he
chose Clement Smetana,
his Chemistry and Foren
sics teacher, as his STAR
teacher.
“Life is all about bal
ancing. Balancing being
a student, working a job
teaching karate and tak
ing SCAD courses along
with my high school
classes has not been
easy for me. However,
one class that helps me
to slow down and priori
tize is Mr. Clem’s foren
sics class,” said Carson.
“At the beginning and
end of class, Mr. Clem
always makes an effort
to talk to the class about
life outside of school.
The way that Mr. Clem
balances quality teaching
and genuine conversa
tion is what made me
choose him as STAR
teacher.”
Smetana, also known
as ‘Mr. Clem’ has a mas
ter’s degree in chemis
try from the University
of Pittsburgh, and an
executive MBA from Ga.
State University. Prior
to his teaching career,
he was the head of the
DNA Analysis section of
the U.S. Army Crime Lab,
where he was employed
for 30 years. He has
taught at Gordon Col
lege, Southern Crescent
Technical College and
now for the last two
years at Rock Springs
Christian Academy. He
lives in Fayetteville with
his wife Debbie, and their
dog Clyde.
