Annette Duckworth
Parse
May 28, 1927-April 28, 2021
A child of the greatest generation, Annette Duck
worth Parse embodied every aspect of this great gen
eration. She was a survivor of the hardships of the
depression and a war bride in 1943 to Clarence White.
Annette was a loving, kind, and a precious treasure
to family and friends alike. Known as
Mom, Grandma, and Grandma Great
she spent her entire life devoted to
the ones she cherished and loved the
most. Annette’s legacy, imparted to
her children, is reflected in her fierce
work ethic, her strong commitment to
family, and her desire to live respon
sibly. Annette was a member of Christ
Community Lutheran Church, Ridgefield, WA.
Annette was born in Milner, GA, the daughter of
Roscoe Bonnyman Duckworth and Frances Sterne
Duckworth Kennedy. She was one of six children
including Louise Wilson (deceased), Julian Duck
worth (deceased), Delia Howard (deceased), Doris
Duckworth (deceased), and a surviving sister, Edwina
Leverett of St. Cloud, FL.
Annette was truly a daughter of the south and
would keep her southern roots long after she had left
the region. The syrupy sound of her southern accent
and her infectious laugh always warmed the hearts of
those with whom she conversed.
In 1950, Annette and her family moved to Rich
mond, CA, where she spent many years raising her
family and working for the telephone company as
an operator and supervisor. In 1965, Annette mar
ried Walter Parse, the love of her life. Together they
moved to Vancouver, Washington in 1968, and in 1977
she retired from the telephone company. Walt and An
nette shared a beautiful life together.
Widowed in 1996, Annette filled her life connect
ing with and loving her huge family. She was always
ready to celebrate birthdays, weddings, and new
babies. She also continued the snow-bird excursions
to Yuma, AZ, begun together with Walt. And her home
in Vancouver was a place to relax for more than 51
years. Annette’s life was truly a life well lived.
In the completion of her full life, Annette is sur
vived by her sons, Craig (Mimi) White, Simpsonville
SC, Paul (Kathy) White, Vancouver, WA, and daughter
Robin White, Las Vegas, NV. Annette was preceded
in death by beloved son Mario White, and is now
reunited together in heaven. Adding to Annette’s
legacy are the beautiful 10 grandchildren and 16 great
grandchildren that she loved so much.
In the closing of Annette’s full, earthly life, we em
brace the memories of this woman of integrity, ser
vice, and sacrifice who enriched the lives of all who
knew her. Now, after a long life, one month short of 94
years, she is in the arms of Jesus. We will all miss her
more than words can convey, but she will always live
on in our hearts.
A Celebration of Annette’s life will be at Memorial
Lutheran Church, 2700 E. 28th St., Vancouver, WA.
Monday, May 24, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. Those wishing to
honor her memory are encouraged to make dona
tions to the Ray Hickey Hospice House 2112 E. Mill
Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA 98661.

Racial Reconciliation
book study to start May 17
On Monday evenings
at 7 p.m., beginning May
17 and continuing for
the next eight weeks, the
general public is invited
to a community-wide
discussion on racial
reconciliation, centered
around the book, “Why
are all the Black Kids
Sitting Together in the
Cafeteria? (And Other
Conversations About
Race)” by Beverly Daniel
Tatum, PhD. James
Butler, Denise Groll and
Cyndi McDonald will
moderate the
discussions.
“The au
thor defines
racism and
speaks from
that shared
definition.
She helps pro
mote
awareness
involving per
spectives as
sociated
with each
race. The book is not
intimidating,” explained
James Butler, when
asked why he chose the
book for the study.
Butler has lived in
Barnesville his entire
life, has a B.S. and two
masters degrees in
psychology, works as a
professional land sur
veyor, and was recently
elected to the school
board. He describes race
relations in our commu
nity as “one of growth
and continued improve
ment. There are so many
good things about Lamar
County. When misunder
standings arise, it’s often
unintentional. These con
versations will help us all
become more aware.”
“Maybe we don’t see
blatant racism every
day, but it exists.” Denise
Groll said. “Until the
playing field is even
for all, there is work to
be done. Our goal is to
bring awareness and to
discuss how we, as a so
ciety, can bring change.
We must embrace our
cultures, celebrate our
diversity, and at the
same time fight for Civil
Rights for all. We need to
listen to one another and
to learn.”
Groll, Manager and Li
brarian of Milner Public
Library, recently moved
to Barnesville from
Vermont. Growing up,
she spent her summers
with her grandparents,
who lived in Macon. Her
undergraduate degree is
in History, with a focus
on civil rights, and she
has a Masters in Library
Science.
“At a time where there
is division in the United
States, we want to bring
people together to talk
honestly about our past
in Lamar County, and
ways to make
our future
better. These
discussions
will focus on
ways to help,
not blame,
and how to
improve race
relations
for the next
generation,”
said Cyndi
McDonald,
who moved
to Barnesville four years
ago to become senior
pastor of Barnesville
First United Methodist
Church.
McDonald has a PhD
in Finance and taught
at the university level
before she was called to
the ministry.
