Eugene Dean Davis
Eugene Dean Davis, 83, of Barnesville passed away
on May 23, 2021. He was born in Fayetteville on July
8, 1937 to the late Paul and Vick Davis.
Dean is survived by his
wife, Joyce Whitlock Da
vis; daughters, Kim Wood-
all (Trey), Kelly West; and
Kristi Cain (Sean); grand
children; Austin, Kelsey
and Kendrick Woodall,
Beau and Davis West,
Chandler Mays (Alec), and
Milz and Caroline Cain;
great-grandchildren, Kay-
lin and Wesley Mays; and
his sister, Joyce Babb.
Memorial services were held at 4:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at First Baptist Church of
Barnesville with Pastor Garth Forester officiating.
The family received friends from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Jerry Charles Martin
Mr. Jerry Charles Martin, age 66, of Milner, Georgia,
passed away on Friday, May 21, 2021 at Tranquility
Hospice at Kennesaw Mountain.
Jerry was born on Thursday, September 30, 1954 in
Barnesville, Georgia to the late Charles Edward Mar
tin and the late Jewell Elizabeth Jones Martin Allmon.
He was preceded in death by a brother, David Martin.
Jerry’s favorite things were his grandkids and golf.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Diane
Duke Martin; daughters and sons-in-law, Melessa &
Bert Mims, Crystal & Kevin Bryant; grandchildren,
Anna Spencer, Zackary Faster, Mackenzie Corley, Cal
vin Mims, Oliver Bryant and Marleigh Mims; brother,
Ronald Martin; sister and brothers-in-law, Judy & har
ry Doggett, Debra & Freddie Crummie; mother-in-law;
Dorothy Duke; several nieces, nephews & cousins.
Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Martin were held at
2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 in the Breedlove
Memorial Chapel with Reverend Garth Forster of
ficiating. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends visited the family on Monday evening from
6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sandra “Sandy” Sims
Sandra “Sandy” Shannon Sims, 76, passed away
Friday, May 21, 2021 at her home in Barnesville, GA.
She was born on Sunday, October 21, 1944 in Kenova,
West Virginia to Virgil Edward and Helen (Cole)
Shannon. Sandy’s father was in the U.S. Army so she
and the family lived throughout the US and Germany
according to where dad was stationed. Finally settling
in Barnesville, where she graduated high school from
Gordon Military College in 1963 and earned a degree
in Cosmetology from Griffin Spaulding Area Vocation
al Technical School in 1982. She enjoyed “doing hair”
at “Potpourri” and became a Master Cosmetologist
and Instructor at Griffin Technical Institute from 1988
to 1992.
Sandy married her high school sweetheart, Roger
David Sims in 1965 and they were happily married for
53 years. Her most important and meaningful roles in
life were serving her family as a beloved wife, mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother. Sandy was a
member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1973
and served as Worthy Matron in the local chapter in
the mid-70’s.
She is survived by her sons, Dean (Tammy) Sims
of Columbus, Georgia; Jason (Dawn) Sims of Fay
etteville, Georgia; brother, Roger (Julianne) Shannon
of Barnesville, Georgia; granddaughters, Shannon
(Wayne) Smith; Shelby Sims; grandsons Dawson and
Jacob Sims; great-grandsons Brayden and Fiam Stein-
haus and great-granddaughter Avery Smith.
Sandy attended Aldora United Methodist Church
and wished for any donations in her memory to be
made to the church. Her family and close friends will
celebrate her life in a small private ceremony.

Carole Burnette Martin
Mrs. Carole June Burnette Martin, age 80, of
Barnesville, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday,
May 26, 2021 at Heritage Inn Nursing Home.
Mrs. Martin was born on Wednesday, June 19,
1940 in Barnesville, Georgia. She was the daughter
of the late Rev. Candler Burnette and the late Roxie
Neal Burnette. She was also preceded in death by
daughter, Marilyn; brother, Colonel Kenneth Burnette;
ex-husband, Farry Martin; aunt, Aurie Hambrick.
She was a homemaker. Carole was a member of both
First Baptist Church of Barnesville and Rock Springs
Church of Milner.
Carole is survived by her son and daughter-in-law,
Keith and Elizabeth Martin; grandchildren, Kathryn
Grace Martin, Mary Kate Martin, Kandler Faye Martin,
Madison Elizabeth Martin; sister, Feamon Burnette
Wainwright; brother-in-law, Gerald Wainwright; niece
and husband, Elizabeth Wainwright & Fee Horton.
A victory celebration for Mrs. Carole Martin was
Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist
Church of Barnesville with Rev. Chip Garrison & Rev.
Garth Forster officiating. Interment will follow at
Greenwood Cemetery. Friends visited the family from
1:00 p.m. until the hour of service at the church.

Friends of the BLC Library donate $6,300
At their May meeting the Friends of the Barnesville-Lamar County Library presented Kelly Hughes, Library Manager, with a

The funds will be used to finance the popular Summer Reading Club, children’s Story Time materials and the fast-growing
Teen Program activities. Technology will also be upgraded with charging stations for computers and a new printer for the main
desk. A new bookshelf for the Genealogy Room will make donated family histories more accessible to users. New audio
books and large print books will also be purchased.
Madison Clark earns degree
Shorter University held its 2021 commencement
exercises on Thursday, May 6, in the Winthrop-King
Centre on Shorter’s Rome campus.
Madison Brooke Clark of Milner is among those
who received their degrees during the 2020-2021
academic year. Clark earned a Master of Accountancy
degree.
West Mt. Sinai celebrates anniversary
West Mount Sinai Baptist Church will celebrate
Rev Waylon T. Knight’s seventh anniversary Sunday,
June 6 at 11 a.m. The service will be held in the sanc
tuary from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Following the service a
drive through will begin at 12:30 p.m. from the north
end of the church going south.
Jewelry course at Barnesville library
The Barnesville Library will host a jewelry mak
ing class for adults only on June 9 in the community
room from 6-7 p.m. Participants will create a tree of
life pendant under the direction of instructor Tammy
York.

Alyssa Sparks makes President’s List
University of North Georgia (UNG) President
Bonita C. Jacobs recently recognized students who
achieved a 4.0 GPA during the spring 2021 semester,
including one from Lamar County.
Alyssa Sparks of Milner was named to the Presi
dent’s Honor Roll.
Students enrolled in 12 or more credit hours in
bachelor’s degree programs who achieved a 4.0
grade point average were named to the President’s
Honor Roll. Students enrolled in associate degree or
dual enrollment programs who met the same level of
achievement were named to the President’s List.
