Citizens talk taxes at Republican forum
WALTER GEIGER

A crowd of just over
50 citizens was on hand
at the courthouse July 13
for a property tax forum
presented by the Re
publican Party of Lamar
County. Many of those in
attendance were con
cerned about increased
property value assess
ments and 2021 tax esti
mates on the assessment
notices.
“We are all in sticker
shock because these
estimates came dur
ing an inflated housing
market,” one citizen said,
summing up the mood.
“These idiots coming
out of Henry County are
paying ridiculous
prices,” another
added.
Commission
chairman Charles
Glass explained
the property tax
assessment system
and how millage
rates are set. Many of
the concerns in the
room were eased by his
thorough presentation.
“Nobody likes property
taxes. They are the most
hated taxes of all time,”
Glass said.
He said early projec
tions are the millage
rate will go down from
13.157 mills last year,
the amount used for the
assessment notice esti
mates, to 12.457
mills this year.
“I’m not making
any promises but
that is what it
looks like,” Glass
said.
Several citi
zens questioned
the one cent sale
tax for roads and bridges
the county is consider
ing. The TSPLOST could
be on local ballots for
voters to decide in No
vember.
Glass said the sales
tax could raise $10.2
million over five years
for road improvements.
When asked if the money
would be used to pave
any dirt roads, Glass
responded, “That is one
V' \
GLASS
of my goals. We have not
paved a dirt road in the
county in six to eight
years.”
Citizens also asked
questions about the
county possibly pur
chasing the old Fred’s
building. Others alleged
roadside mowing is
shabby work now that
the county has contract
ed it out.
Several expressed,
publicly and privately,
concerns about the
rumored sale of the
Cedar Grove Landfill by
the Solid Waste Author
ity to a private LLC, the
authority’s solvency and
its ability to pay back
extensive loan debt. (See

Two large buildings owned by SWA
The Lamar County Solid Waste Authority recently completed construction of a large facility (top photo) on the site of the
Cedar Grove landfill. The authority already owned the Enercon Building (bottom photo), the exterior of which appears to have
fallen into disrepair.
The authority bought the building, which previously housed Evans Steel Enterprises, and 48.16 acres for $2 million in Febru
ary 2018.
