FAITH & VALUES
Milner UMC to celebrate
150th anniversary on Oct. 3
Members,
former members
and friends of
Milner United
Methodist
Church will help
celebrate the
church’s 150
years, 81 pastors
and innumerable
acts of love and charity
with a special “Home
coming” Sunday, Oct. 3.
When founded by the
Rev. William H. Graham
in 1871, in a one-room
schoolhouse across
from the railroad tracks,
the Milner Methodist
Episcopal Church South
had 23 members. Since
that time the congrega
tion has grown, evolved
and thrived. The church
is now part of the
United Methodist family
of churches, coupled in
a “charge” with Marvin
United Methodist on
Johnstonville Road out
side Barnesville.
The two churches
share a pastor, Jan
Sherwood, one of many
who has served both
congregations. A pri
mary mission of
the Milner UMC
has been de
scribed as “the
religious, social
and personal
good health of
the local people
and the world
communities.”
Some of the church’s
well-known good works
include the Sociable
Friends monthly free
lunches for seniors; a
designated Sociables
lunch in summer which
honors all local first
responders with ham
burgers, hot dogs and
side dishes; Christmas
Shoebox Program, a
national program to fill
shoeboxes with toys
and supplies for needy
children around the
world; new backpacks
for children in Lamar
County schools; Christ
mas Angels gifts from
members to needy
teenagers locally; the
Buggy Days hot dog
stand which supports
the church missions
committee, and many
others.
David Quiznon, who
joined Milner Method
ist five years ago when
he and his wife Mar
ian moved here from
Minnesota, comments,
“Unfortunately, some of
the church’s outreach
and support activities
have been suspended
because of the pandem
ic. But we are healthy
and want to help when
needed. Weekly worship
services are at 9:30 a.m.
Sundays, but if anyone
has an immediate need,
call Pastor Sherwood at
770-358-4504.”
The Oct. 3 celebra
tion begins with wor
ship at 11 a.m. and
will feature tributes
to pastors and a free
luncheon, plus musical
artists and a special
guest speaker. Quiznon
adds, “Although the
Milner United Methodist
Church remains small
in size, it can match the
size of its heart with
any organization. Cel
ebrate with us!”
