Georgia 4-Hers explore higher
education pathways in Athens
High school students
from more than 30 coun
ties explored pathways
to higher education at a
statewide gathering of
Senior 4-H’ers in Athens
on Nov. 13 and 14. This
special event is known
as “Weekend in the Clas
sic City” and provides a
comprehensive picture
of diverse collegiate
options in Georgia. Stu
dents attending with
the Lamar County 4-H
program included Eri
reyonna Barkley, Shelby
Brock, Jasmyn Dixson,
Charlissia Head and
Kaitlin Neal.
Five students en
rolled in the Lamar
County 4-H program
participated in this an
nual event that began
in 2001 when Collegiate
4-H Club members from
the University of Geor
gia invited high school
students
to campus
as part of a
class proj
ect. The
initiative
has grown
to include
nearly 100
students
each year
from wide
ly varied backgrounds
who enjoy a day at the
birthplace of higher
education.
Weekend in the Clas
sic City shows youth
that there isn’t one an
swer to the question of
what path to take after
high school. “Higher
education is about ex
ploring career options,
interests, and talents,”
said Jenna Daniel,
University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension
4-H specialist. “This is
the perfect event for
that explo
ration, and
we allow
high school
youth time
and space
to discover
these con
cepts.”
Each
participat
ing 4-H’er
experienced this event
with a designated small
group that included
peers and adult leaders.
Those groups were facil
itated by current college
students who provided
real-world perspective
on their educational
experience. Lamar
County 4-H’er Erireyon
na Barkley commented,
“It was a fun and educa
tional experience that
gave me a look into life
on campus at the Uni
versity of Georgia. We
were given a tour of the
campus, visited the city
of Athens, and talked to
college students first
hand”. Students also
heard from UGA experts
in financial aid, admis
sions, and the College of
Agricultural and Envi
ronmental
Georgia 4-H empow

true leaders by develop
ing necessary life skills,
positive relationships
and community aware
ness. As the largest
youth leadership orga

4-H reaches more than
175,000 people annually
through UGA Extension
offices and 4-H facilities.
