MAY LCHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian announced Class of 2021 Valedictorian Ryla Nicole Traylor and Salutatorian Saffron Abreu were close friends and fierce competitors for the top academic spots in their graduating class. Ryla signed a scholarship to play softball at Tennessee State University and plans a career in the medical field - either sports or general orthopedic surgery. Seda also said the library dilemma is only part of the reason why Milner should no longer be a city, noting debts on the non-functioning water tower and other water and sewer obligations that will cost millions of dollars as the years pass. He made a motion to dissolve the city charter but it died for lack of a second. At the June meeting, Milner coun cil members refuted Seda’s debt figures, noting that Georgia libraries receive funding from the govern ment. The June meeting started calm but ended with a call for the removal of council member Skip Seda and arguing. JUNE Troop 38 celebrates 75 th birthday Boy Scout Troop 38 of Barnesville celebrated 75 years of scouting with a special party and reunion Saturday, June 5. The event was held at the Scout Hut in Aldora Park behind the new high school. It was the last Scouting event held at the hut as the property was taken over by the school system as athletics/ ROTC complex. Troop 38 moved temporarily to Al dora Methodist Church. VFW Post 6542 celebrates 75 years VFW Post 6542 celebrated 75 years at Deraney’s Two-City Tavern with the traditional drink Chatham artilleryman’s punch. Construction on a new VFW building was planned with fundraising ongoing and work expected to start in 2021 on the north side of the existing post home. Commissioners consider TSPLOST County commissioners discussed putting a one cent local option sales tax that would bring in over $10 million in its five-year span on the November ballot. Commission chairman Charles Glass said the TSPLOST would triple the county’s capacity to pave and resurface roads. The county’s ESPLOST was ap proved by voters earlier in the year. Summer celebrations planned Three people were injured when the driver of a Toyota 4Runner lost control while southbound on Veterans Parkway, ran off the road into the Reliable Mart parking lot and hit a Ford pickup truck which was parked. Officers on the scene suspected the driver of the Toyota was affected by a medical condi tion before the crash. The driver of the Toyota and two others in the truck were injured. The front of the store also suffered significant damage. 'Hambone' Hamrick dies at age 63 Local legend Stan ‘Hambone’ Hamrick died at Eternal Hope Hospice after a long battle with cancer. He operated Ham rick’s Sporting Goods & Pawn on College Drive and was a longtime Scout leader. He was also one of the community’s most colorful characters. Private landfill operation proposed The Lamar County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) held a public hearing regarding entering into a landfill operation agreement with a private, for-profit company called Cedar Grove Landfill that is based in West Point, Georgia. Amwaste of Georgia LLC took over the garbage and recycling collection service for the city of Barnesville earlier in the year, issuing new carts to all customers. The business is a registered agent at the same West Point location as Cedar Grove Landfill LLC. SWA board members unanimously ap proved the agreement. HAMRICK A Lamar County couple charged with running a puppy mill at their Johnstonville Road home entered guilty pleas to all the 30 counts filed against them, in cluding six counts aggravated cruelty to animals, 23 counts cruelty to animals and one count of improper disposal of a dead animal. Each were sentenced to 10 years probation, a $2,500 fine and 250 hours of com munity service. They were banned from having any animals during the probationary period and subject to random testing. Woman hit by train in Barnesville died Nancy Butts was struck by a train while walking in downtown Barnesville April 22 and she succumbed to her injuries May 8 at Eternal Hope Hospice in Grif fin at age 66. She did not want a funeral or memorial service and her family asked instead that any dona tions can be sent to Doctors Without Borders or the Dolly Goodpuppy Society in Nancy’s name. Milner council issues, arguing create chaos Milner City Council member Skip Seda said in the May meeting that the library’s budget would bank rupt the city without donations from the Friends of The Local VFW planned a huge fireworks show for its Independence Day celebration Saturday, July 3 as well as a benefit ride, music and a barbecue. The chamber of commerce announced plans to bring back the Summer Sizzle, a cruise-in antique car show and concert at Ritz Park. JULY Heroic effort saves 7-year-old boy First responders saved the life of a 7-year-old boy at an Airbnb at 312 Collier Road in Barnesville on July 1. The boy was discovered underwater in the pool and adults at the property called 911 and began CPR. First responders worked to keep him alive as the resuscitation efforts continued en route to Spalding Regional. He was flown to an Atlanta trauma unit. Se curity video at the house showed the boy swimming in the deep end. It appeared he ingested some water, started struggling and eventually went under. Bizarre crash injures three, damages store Local athletes head to Junior Olympics Lamar County’s 12-year-old Makayla Watts, 9-year- old Christian Sullivan and 11-year-old Alonah Wil liams headed out of state to compete in the Junior Olympics. Makayla and younger sister Christian headed to Humble, Texas for AAU’s Junior Olympics and Alonah headed south to the USATF’s Junior Olympics in Jacksonville, Florida. AUGUST LC schools to reopen in-person only It was announced that Lamar County schools would re-open for the 2021-22 school year offer ing in-person instruction only. The virtual learning program put in place due to COV1D-19 was discontin ued. Superintendent Dr. Jute Wilson said enrollment numbers are up at most schools.
