Richard Vereen, who
has been with the city
of Barnesville for 15
years in the public works
department, will now be
the new director of utili
ties and public works.
Jamie Copeland, who
has worked with several
departments since 2013,
will be the new electric
superintendent. He suc
ceeds Glenn Allen, who is
retiring.
City manager Tim
Turner said both men
were among several ap
plicants for the positions.
He introduced Vereen
and described him as “al
ways helpful, responsible
to his peers and others,”
and a very capable and
diligent worker. Cope
land, Turner said, “has
assisted in any depart
ment where needed and
does whatever is neces
sary to solve problems.”
He also commented he
is “confident these men
will be good superinten
dents.”
The council approved
both appointments
unanimously. The council
also voted unanimously
to appoint Mark Irvin, a
lawyer and judge in Pike
County, as city court
prosecutor/solicitor. He
succeeds Heath English,
who has asked to be
replaced.
Council heard the first
reading of an ordinance
to make Market Street
a one-way thoroughfare
westbound from Main
Street to Greenwood
Street. Provision will be
made to allow access to
the drive-up United Bank
tellers, and the second
reading of the ordinance
will be in the June 6 city
council meeting.
Before the council
went into executive
session to discuss real
estate, Michael Rogers
asked for a report from
the recent council re
treat. Turner and others
noted that some dis
cussion items included
buying and selling of real
estate, the city’s rates
structure, prioritizing of
needs - foremost was
infrastructure repairs
including streets and
sewerage problems - use
of TSPLOST funding and
several other topics.
Several council mem
bers said the retreat was
very helpful and praised
the work done during the
gathering as good exer
cise in team-building, and
an opportunity to make
more concrete plans
for Barnesville. Butch
McDaniel said the retreat
was “something we
should do more often;”
Mayor Peter Banks and
the other council mem
bers agreed.
