There were eight accidents.
Lamar County Sheriff’s Deputies served 14 state

GSC celebrates spring Commencement activities
For the first time since
2019, Gordon State Col
lege held its commence
ment ceremonies May 13
on Lambdin Green on the
campus. Two separate
ceremonies honored 252
graduates receiving 264
total degrees.
Baccalaureate and
associates degrees from
the School of Business,
Liberal Arts and Social
Sciences (BLASS) were
presented in the first
ceremony. The second
celebrated graduates
from the School of Nurs
ing, Health and Natural
Sciences (NHNS) and
the School of Education,
Mathematics and Ap
plied Sciences (EMAS).
During the event, college
president Dr. Kirk Nooks
commented, “The time
and work these gradu
ates have endured here
has prepared them to
do things they never
thought possible. They
have persevered through
significant changes under
difficult circumstances ...
they represent inspiring
evidence of the wisdom
you achieved (and) the
full meaning of Highland
ers Forward.”
BLASS presented a
total of 58 baccalaureate
degrees and 76 associ
ate degrees for a total
of 134. Keynote speak
ers included Tiffney T.
Laing, founder of an
award-winning multime
dia education company.
The 57 EMAS graduates
earned 47 baccalaureate
degrees and 10 associate
degrees. Seventy-three
NHNS grads received 55
baccalaureates and 18
associate degrees.
Keynote speakers for
the second ceremony
included the 2019 Geor
gia Superintendent of the
Year as chosen by the
Georgia School Superin
tendents Association, Dr.
Curtis Jones, a Barnes
ville native. After an hon
or-filled career in educa
tion, he was awarded an
honorary degree from his
hometown college.
The Book and Bell cer
emony, dating back to the
19th century, was held
after commencement.
Each education graduate
received a school bell
and a McGuffey’s reader,
two tools used most
often by teachers in the
mid-19th to early 20th
centuries. The pinning
ceremony for Nursing
School graduates was
held in the afternoon at
the Student Activity and
Recreation Center.
