DDA
votes to
postpone
block party
WALTER GEIGER
news@bamesville.com
At a special called meet
ing July 3, the Barnesville
Downtown
Develop
ment
Authority
voted to
postpone a
block party
which had
been set for
August 12. STANLEY
Chairper
son Heather Stanley noted
that the term block party
“scares some people” and
said it could be called
Barnesville Live or Com
munity Night.
She envisioned an event
to “bring the community
together” by blocking off
Main Street and provid
ing a kids area, cornhole
tournament, food trucks
and music.
Member Courtney
Claxton questioned the
cost of the
event and
said the
DDA has
no event
insurance
to cover
liability.
Member
Steven
Yerkes
suggested
events
were best
left to the
Chamber of
Commerce.
“1 feel like
we are step
ping on the
chamber’s YERKES
toes. They
do events. It seems like
we are cutting them out,”
he said. Yerkes also asked
about a budget and was
told there was not one.
Member Tammie Smith
noted simply, “We don’t
have any money.”
Stanley said the DDA
in Athens puts on many
events. Claxton countered
that Athens holds a Main
Street City designation
that puts them in line for
grants. “I’m not confident
we are ready for that,”
Claxton said.
