Newspaper Page TextHERE’S THE SCOOP DURHAM Stephanie Durham in Dist. 4 DPH employee of the month Stephanie Durham RN of the Lamar County health department staff has been named Dist. 4 employee of the month by the Georgia Depart ment of Public Health. Durham started work here in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic. She worked tirelessly in test ing and vaccinating at mass sites. Durham arrived here as a seasoned nurse with hospital and home health experience. She has become a vital part of the staff and patients ask for her by name. Stephanie and her husband Ben have a daughter Carolyn and a dog Maggie. She enjoys reading and camping. Subscribe. Your name goes on the label in this box 96852 78853 Wilson retiring Dec. 1; board will have interim supt. candidate by Nov. 13 WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com Chairman Ron Smith reported Thursday that the school board plans to have a candidate for interim superintendent ready for approval by the Nov. 13 board meet ing. Current superin tendent Dr. Jute Wilson announced last week he plans to retire Dec. 1 after 30 years in education. Smith noted that Wilson is leaving the system in great shape. “We will take the time to consider all op tions and ensure the needs of the district are being met. With the school year firmly underway, the budget and millage rate ap proved and all positions filled, Dr. Wilson felt this was an opportune time to step down. We have a solid staff and quality leadership in place. We hope to have a plan in early spring on how we will proceed with filling the posi tion,” Smith said. The homecoming parade is set for Thursday. Units will lineup at the Gordon parking lots off College Drive beginning at 4:30 p.m. The parade begins at 5 p.m. The Trojans will do battle with Social Circle Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The traditional homecoming festivities will take place at halftime. Trojans rout Red Devils 31-0, prepping for homecoming Friday WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com The Lamar County Trojans (3-2) rolled past the Jackson Red Devils 31-0 here last week to set the stage for home coming week. The So cial Circle Redskins will come to town Friday for the big event. The Trojans were methodical in dealing with Jackson last week. Qua Hughley scored on a 16-yard run at the 3:54 mark of the first quar ter. Caleb Miller’s PAT made it 7-0. Just over three min utes later, quarterback Ty Head scored on a one-yard run. The PAT failed and it was 13-0. At the 3:10 mark of the second period, Miller stroked a 40-yard field goal to make it 16-0 at the half. “That field goal was big. We got great play out of our kickoff team as well. What's new, what's next for Gordon's Dr. Green At the end of August, Gordon State Col lege interim president Dr. Donald J. Green marked his first 100 GREEN days in office. In those three months and almost two weeks, Green left no room for procrastination and made great progress toward his goal of realign ing GSC’s trajectory with central Georgia’s econom ic boom. Green understands the growing demand for people with specialized skills and therefore has put a great focus on the importance of student out comes: retention, gradu ation and employability. He sees the value added by GSC and the potential for greater contribution to our local region. “We’re seeing, in the last three years, fewer students pursuing college. Because of this, there’s now an expanding demand for talent for specialized skill professions. That employable talent only comes from having a college degree and being able to be well educated in various areas,” Green said. “We’re explaining to students the necessity of having these specific skills, so they can take SEE DR. GREEN 4A Shots fired Saturday at Sammie’s; nobody injured Multiple shots were fired near dusk Saturday at Sammie’s on Mill Street but no one was hit. EMTs were called to the scene to treat one person who was injured in a fall during the dustup which triggered a huge law enforcement response. “We never could get a straight story from anyone about what happened. We did collect shell casings from the road and parking lot but no one was hit,’ BPD chief Belinda Pena- mon reported Sunday.
